Hrqls: There are a couple players (or at least one, that many know about) who has had at least 90 (possibly 120!) vacation days in 2008 because of doing this. Not fair at all to the other players in any tournaments they are holding up.
rod03801: yes and it is unfortunate that something can't be done about it as well.....a bad loop in the system it is....... and the person you are talking about is paid up to 2014, surely that indicates he is rorting the system when it comes to moves, and it was only a couple days ago he was whingeing and whining about not being able to get another paid up year..........
Fencer: Yep, but why can't there be a little update to the holiday system. If you move on a day then you can't be classed as being on holiday. As it is upto the player to play the least time games first as I think most of us do so we keep our holiday for genuine reasons.
(V): That would not work. I know when I visit my sister-in-law, all she has is dial-up, and I set vacation days - but do try to stop by and play a few games - if playing the few games would take me off of the vacation and make may games time out - that would be bad.
Another example would be if I have about 10 games ready to time out (but on vacation), try to play 1, and then suddenly have the other 9 time out because I did not play fast enough because the system took me off vacation would also be bad.
(So doing that would only slow games down more since it would encourage players to not even try to visit the site if they can)
The things I would like to see fixed:
1. Don't allow people more vacation days if they renew their membership. I know this has been done in the past - sometimes multiple times in a row. If anything, maybe a 1 time thing were you get 10 additional vacation days if a membership is purchased, but never more then 10 days. (even though I would like to see it as 0).
2. .... there was something else I was just thinking about, but it escapes me right now.
coan.net: i beleive im right in saying didnt Chad at GT try the exact same thing with vacation days not letting you play at all if you had booked vacation and im sure that didnt last very long because it was a really bad idea
but i like to see no vacation days returned after youve used your quota up except in special causes which you should ask Fencer about
my own case is quite simply i do buy my vacation days back because im able to but i dont actually abuse them its ill health that stops me keeping up with things so to penalise someone by not gaving any back thou ill health is kinda scary to me
coan.net: I see your point. I think your option "1" is a good idea, and prevent abuse of the system which some do. It's getting like KM again in some ways where a loophole has been found in the system and people are cheating on their ratings because of it by only playing games they will win. Or by making it that some just time out just to get the free space (such as pawns) as the game has been delayed so long.
pauloaguia: I hope Fencer will answer, that is an interesting situation. The rules do say "standard Chess rules" except for what was listed, and if that is so - I would guess it is a stalemate & draw.
How can someone remove the damn flying Dragon, aka-the-single-most--disgusting-thing-that-gets-in-my-nerves- that is sucking my CPU resources(even 99%) every time it decides to fly?
And i don't mean by changing the castle layout. I like the castle. I just hate the flying CPU resource whirlpool.
Constellation36: Even if you change the layout, the dragon is still there (just hidden) - and even while hidden takes a lot of resources - I've been playing a lot less on this site since lately I've been watching movies on my PC while playing games.... and of curse this is the only site I can't since the dragon (at least I'm guessing it is the dragon) comes and steals so much of my browsers & computers resources it does not allow me to do much anything else with my computer at the same time.
I've posted about it before on this board, and even recently requested it again on the Feature Requests board - have not heard nothing yet. It is a shame since the winter time is when I usually get the most games played, but this season I've not been able to spend as much time on this site. (My other game sites that I play on are doing quite well though.)
coan.net: Oh i see so it's even more of a tragedy than i thought. So we can't kill the Dragon by any means and it will remain there torturing us!
And it IS the Dragon your problem. Just go to another site with a similar moving disaster, where it snows, for example here----> LINK and see the same kind of disaster. 99% CPU resources are off.
And yes Brainking becomes unbelievably annoying to have it loaded in a tab. I have to close it too all the time.
I don't know what the fuss is.. I have my game page open all day long while I work and I never ever see the dragon anymore.. I never go to the sign in page so no dragon.
Rose: Well what it looks like is it is coded into many pages on the site - but most of the time just set to not show - still runs, just does not show (well I use a theme to always hide it so I never see it except for when I first sign in) - but he is still there in the background causing problem.
Like right now, I'm typing this while watching a movie, and now the movie is freezing stopping (and has been working well for the past 3 hours) - open up the task manager, Firefox is using between 85-99% of the CPU. I will finish this post, close the BrainKing tab - and the CPU will go back down to the normal 5-10%
Again, maybe it's not the dragon - but it is definitely this site.
coan.net: Interesting. It is true that dragon causes some kind of increased load but I have tried it on several computers and none of them was using more than 35% of CPU. Furthermore, it happens only with Firefox and Internet Explorer, Opera works smoothly and shows no strange behavior, most likely because its JavaScript processor is not as buggy as the one of other browsers. Anyway, the code should not be loaded with other styles (except the castle one) and you can even turn off all animations, using a new switch "Enable style animations" at your Settings / General page.
Fencer:One could always add http://noscript.net/ to the FireFox addons but I'm not sure what all that might affect. Frankly, I use the "Simple" layout and the dragon isn't an issue for me.
Artful Dodger: Before, i had it set to the no-font layout, and then used my own external .css (but had tried all 3 with the same resultes.) Problem before, even if you did not see the dragon, it was still loading with many of the pages of BrainKing (you could look at the page source and still see it loading - but just not flying across the screen).
I could open my Wndows Task Manager, and look at all my running processes - sort on CPU, and as soon as I starting doing anything in brainking site, Firefox would peg out between 80-99% of the CPU (slowing everything else down) - and if I let the page just sit there, it would stay that way for about 45 seconds to 90 seconds (which is about the time it takes the dragon to fly across the screen.) - and then brainking would stop using all the CPU. I can have 20 other tabs open with very little issue, but as soon as the BrainKing tab is opened - boom - there goes my CPU.
Fencer: I just tried that setting, and tried out a few pages while watching the CPU - and firefox seems to be staying between 00 - 03% while I have this site open (a quick jump to about 70% for a second while the page loads - but I see that as normal and only lasted for under 1 second) - so looks good so far - Thanks a lot! (I'll give it a good test later today as I have a movie I want to watch on my computer and plenty of games to get through.)
coan.net:It could be a good addition to Brainking if we could have a game where we shoot the dragon and then it can't load on our computer for the day. We get 3 shots and if we miss with 3, or don't kill it but only wound it, a second dragon appears. Just for the day of course.
AbigailII: I tried using Adblock Plus just to see what happens, and set it to block those 2 things.
Something has happened , a game page now loads between 0.76 and 1.9 depending on game involved. Whats odd is that i only blocked them on the main page as they do not show up as being there on any other page i can find, though coan.net says it does. Have to wait for him to wake up lol
Fencer: Thanks, although at present no one has gone anywhere
I personally think a better rule should be found. With this lowest rating thing we may as well just toss a coin at the start.
How about a setting in the Tournament that by default is the way it is OR that can be changed to play another game . That would be a lot fairer way to do it
Tuesday: It will not let you. If you moved your 9 piece, then all your pieces would be on the 14 point and you would not be able to use the dice with one on
Tuesday: Yes you have to use the largest number of rolls possible. In that case the rolls are {1} and {5}. You can use both. So you should use both. :-)
MadMonkey: How about a setting in the Tournament that by default is the way it is OR that can be changed to play another game
That's already possible. What I do when I create an elimination game is to not use 'normal game' but a '1 win'. In that case, the game is replayed (with switched colours) in case of a draw.
I still am unable to adjust the quailty of the ratings of the people i wish to play. for example i posted a game of open espionage but i do not with to play anyone lower than 1800 and no higher than 4000. i clicked the area where you can adjust this but when i posted the game it says anyone can play. i have been trying to figure this out for the last 2 years with no luck...
