crosseyed: Just curious if you tried one of the suggestions that others have said worked?

(try using brainking.cz) Others have said it worked better for them.

Of course the site will show up in Czech, so you would then have to click on the English flag over on the right side of the screen, and then click the confirmation button that you want to change languages.

The results are that BK.com getting slower 'pings' (and in some cases no returns) than BK.cz

So http://brainking.cz

No improvement today on the speed. I just had 10 rows of the smiley's before I could click to save my move. I keep getting distorted pages also.
Then I got this at:

The site is temporarily down
BrainKing cannot connect to the database server. Administrators have been notified and try to fix this problem as soon as possible. Thank you for understanding.

The page was distorted yet I am still here?

Out of the 85 moves I've made today, about 5 of them were a little slow with the graphics loading - and 1 of them the graphics did not fully load, but a quick refresh of the page brought them all up. (waiting on the i.brainking.com to load images)

I use Firefox which does start to show the page BEFORE all graphics are loaded - some other browsers will first download ALL graphics BEFORE showing the page, so will be a "white" page since it may be trying to download graphics.

I also use the very minimal of graphics on this site - the "no font" mode, and have most all other features that could cause slow loading turn off, so for the most part - very quick for me overall.

I have two computers I use to get on BK. One is very slow and this one is very fast. If I judged BK only by the slower one, then I'd say the site is slow. Fortunately I have another computer to compare. So I know that the problem is the other computer.

Whenever I have trouble with BK (rarely but it happens) I try other sites. But even this won't tell me what the problem is as it's a long way from the West Coast of the USA to Fencer's server. I have no idea the route that is taken but considering the mileage, even slow is faster than a US Jet Fighter making the trip at Mach Speed. Even dial up could be the fastest jet when you think about it. :)

Still, I understand it's frustrating when things are slow. But likely the slowness is due to the route one takes and not the destination.

It is strange that for some it has slowed, and others it is fast. For me, it seems just as fast as always, maybe even faster. I have always had my cookies/cache cleared every time I exit the browser, and I never have had issues.

Doing refresh (F5) on the main page is slow. clicking on the "Main page" link is much faster. Why, I can't guess, they should be the same.

coan.net: Thanks for your post. My friend has managed to get into the site and play games now. However he is getting lots of problems where pages are not loading properly.

This is NOT a complaint but more of an observation. I too am finding that pages are not downloading properly and I get the long pause with just a white page and sometimes the page is distorted. As long as I am able to play the games it does not bother me.

coan.net: "Cleaning cache" can mean different things to different people. When I decide to clear cache I have several options which I can choose to delete or not delete.

Cookies for example. I usually keep the cookies of the sites that I more or less trust, such as BK, while deleting the cookies from all other sites.

Today just now I cleared cookies for BK, something I haven't done in many months. The site is now loading much faster than it was before, noting that I am one of the people who had problems with the loading speed of the site very recently.

*edit: I also want to note that I clear my cache every day, at least once a day actually. After clearing what I want to clear, I then individually pick out which cookies to delete.

It could be something else I suppose. I also rebooted, then installed a flash reader update, then rebooted again. I know nothing of computers really, maybe that had something to do with it instead, I have no idea.

crosseyed: Sorry I don't have any suggestions since "everything" has already been done on the users side.

With a site change, when the IP address moves with the site there should be even less issues - but something issues with Cache pointing to the "old" place can cause issues with a site only 1/2 working... but with that already done, I guess that will not work.

Also using different browsers to see if the issue is with the browser and not the site or computer would be another suggestion - but since that was already done, I guess that was not it.

Also having the user log in from a different computer (if possible) to see if the issue is with the account or computer is another suggestion - but since that was already done, I guess that was not it.

And of course the suggestion already made to try to log in to a BrainKing domain they normally do not use (which will hopefully be "new" to the DNS and retrieve all the new & correct information to the computer.)

... it's hard to try to help once everything has already been tried.

crosseyed: When it comes to computers, the difference between moving a site and upgrading a site can make a big difference in where a problem can be regarding access. This is not arguing, it is a fact of the computer age and of the www.

This is why I say "everything?" as sometimes (as I recall from past problems) a simple yet overlooked fix at your friends end could be affecting access.

As to be a know all.. no. Just someone (as with many people here) who knows how finicky computers and the web are.

It  is odd that since Fencer changed things that some of us are getting problems with this site. I keep getting the long white page and the page take ages to download and other strange things happening with the site.

However even if it is Global it only happened when Fencer upgraded this site.

Bottom line:

As I have mentioned in the Server News, we are still in a process of tuning some servers parameters, just to make sure that everything is balanced to the best performance. However, it is very unlikely that if a problem occurs and it is actually caused by the site, it would affect only a few users. In 10 years of our existence, we had solved many bad situations and all of them had been caused by global issues - affecting the whole site.

By the way, I never said that I am the best programmer in the world who can solve every possible problem. If a buggy situation just happens and, after trying my best, I find out that I am out of ideas and no solution works, well, we must learn to live with it.

I have a 30 Mbps cable connection at home and although it is a very fast line, there are still many sites that work incredibly slow for me. I don't complain, I take it as a fact.

Guys, please. What do you want from me, miracles?

As you can see, there are many people who confirm that BrainKing is accessible and fast for them, as usual. Our internal tests that are running continuously show that all functions work normally, there is no overload and data throughput is smooth, showing no anomalies.

I don't say that people who has problems are idiots or don't know how to use their computers. On the contrary, it is quite possible that BrainKing is slow for some of them, because that's how the web works, naturally. My duty is to keep the site alive and, if a problem shows up, try to solve it. From our perspective, nothing unusual happens here and something wrong happens outside the server, we can hardly do anything about it.

crosseyed: From a user's point of view, nothing has actually changed, even the server's IP address is still the same. Host tracker confirms that BrainKing is accessible from everywhere.
As temporary workaround, ask them to try another domain, e.g. BrainKing.cz, BrainKing.de etc., just in case it is a local DNS problem.
