wetware: LOL - And this is why I'm not a cat person A dog will go lay down when you tell it to, or be easily bribed with a nice long walk, a treat or two, or a tennis ball. Cats seem to be always thinking, thinking, thinking...I watched a friends cat for five months one time, and even tho I was allergic to it, and he had a great bed to sleep in, every morning I'd wake up with a cat on my face. It was as if he knew that was the one way to get me. He was also the only animal that scared my dog at the time, if another dog tried to eat out of the dog's dish, it was a fight to the death, but that cat just did whatever he wanted...again, as if that cat just knew he had the upperhand...Cats are too smart for me

Read California's Wild Animal code to find that owning, importing and possessing monkeys is illegal in the entire state. Exceptions are only granted to zoos, museums and universities after a hearing and issuance of a permit.

it is no legal to own a pet monkey in the ENTIRE state of California.  If anyone owns a pet monkey in that state, they are breaking the law.

ChillChick: Not only is keeping a chimp CRUEL, but where you live it is ILLEGAL too!

Asides to the cruelty & legalality issues, chimps can also be very aggressive, extremely complex & very territorial & they can carry disease communicable to humans. You have said you have a small child! Not very responsible!

My blood is boiling at the very fact you have a primate which such a close relative to humankind as a PET! Im utterly disgusted!!

ChillChick:  This discussion board talks about issues concerning animals.  The people that participate on this board are very sensitive to animal rights and adherence to the laws of the state.   You're new around here and yet you've managed to have one of your posts moderated on the general chat board on your first post.  And after that experience, you manage to get into arguments with the people on this board.  As a moderator of this board, that sends up a red flag for me.  I want to caution you on any further provocation of others.

I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't ask the board to table the monkey discussion.  Actually, the discussion itself is fine, but I do ask that barbs aimed toward ChillChick be stopped.

Interestingly as I type this, Fox news has a piece on a custody battle between a woman and the State of Maryland.  And the custody is over?  You guessed it, a monkey.  I suspect she is in violation of the law too and they took her Monkey away.  I'll report, you decide. ;)

I have said nothing I wouldnt say face to face. Infact it would be alot worse face to face as I would take action to get that poor defenceless chimp free & back where it belongs.....assuming the story is true!

Lambyless:  That's a great link.  I did a quick google search and National Geographic said pretty much the same thing.  Here's that story about the Maryland woman fighting the State over custody of her monkey.

story here

The lady was just on Fox news and said they were prepared to go to the highest court over this!   The pictures they showed we're kinda cute.  The monkey has it's own special room and she does give it lots of attention.  But that is not representative of what normally goes on with keeping monkeys as pets.   Most people find that the monkeys are difficult to keep as pets after they reach sexual maturity.  They often become agressive as they try to assert their dominance.

I'll stick with cats and dogs. ;)

Subject: Re:
rod03801: I find it virtually impossible not to mention her character, or anyone one elses for that matter, if they are going to come on here and announce they have a chimp as a pet!

It isnt the same as just having a general conversation 'Primates as Pets' (being the topic).
I could quite easily have a discussion about primates being kept as pets, and how utterley wrong & immoral it is, yes, BUT an actual person has announced they have have a chimp as a pet.
That to me is the same as someone coming on here announcing any other type of animal abuse.

The person is at fault for that, its cruel, so that is part of the persons character!

Im am so strongly involved in animal rights as Im sure alot of you are aware. Ive made my feelings known on this now. She needs investigating by the Calafornian Authorities for the illegal inprisonment of a chimpanzee!

Im finished with this discussion!

I don't necessarily think it's true - California is one of the MOST difficult states in the Union to own and/or harbor an "exotic" pet in. And if it is true, eventually some kind-hearted soul will report it (especially if it's kept outdoors) - I would in a heartbeat A chimp isn't a "pet", it's a wild animal, which belongs in it's natural habitat, or if not there, then in a zoo where it can be cared for properly, something your average person is not equipped to do.

I very much doubt this person either owns a chimp or aspires to own a spider monkey. They probably saw the response I got from posting the video and knew they'd get a reaction. Some people just like to stir things up.

Tuesday: Oh dear Lord..I cannot believe that woman would BRAG about that....for petes sake..not tlike she was protecting her kids from a wild rabid mountain lion!! which...btw...IF I am ever out hiking and get killed by one...somebody PLEASE let the authorities know I do NOT want the cat killed,lol....I am in his nieghborhood.

I heard Vick's Mom said that her son has found God now and that he should be forgiven...I am NOT even going to go there because of the kinds of discussion it might bring up BUT ....just because someone says they suddenly change, they should be forgiven and all is forgotten?? PLEASE!!I agree Tuesday that if you can do that to a defensless animal....something that is totally 100% dependant on you for help and food and love and protection,I feel that person is MORE then capible of doing something horrific to a person....Isn't there some study that says about serial killers being known for torturing and killing animals as a prequil (sp) to hurting humans???
