Whisperz.. You aren't a lone voice.. I, too, like the time limit system here.
If a serious player doesn't like 30 day time limits, then they don't have to sign up for those! The way it is now, at least people can CHOOSE what is best for them!
I must say, that I do also like the idea mentioned here.. I could be happy with either method...
Giving tournament and single game creators the choice of either method would proably be the best idea of all..

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FENCER!

Viking, don`t you know a chessclock? A chessclock has one part for every player and runs only if the player has to move. And if the player has moved he pushs a button and only the clock of his opponent runs. So it is clear that you can certainly use the opponents time! For instance in 10moves / 30 days both player has to reach the 10th move until the 30th day is over but every player has the 30 days = 60 days (without weekends). And if you move 3-4 moves a little bit faster you have more time for the rest of the ten moves.Btw this is the regular mode which is used by chessplayers all over the world. In our OTB-Games (this morning I have lost:( ) we play 40 moves / 2 hours and then 1 hour for the rest of the game. That means that the game can run four hours until the first timecontrol (40th move) and after six hours it is over at the latest (today it was earlier) .In fast games we play an half hour in blitzgames 5 minutes (every) for the complete game.

If timer would be for poth parties then whoever would be losing would just time out anyway

9. November 2003, 17:19:32
Vikings
the only problem I see with these time limits is that whoever moves second can force the first one to lose because of time limits, eg, 10 in 5 days, the second player just has to wait 4 days 23 hours and 59 minusts to move, then the first player cannot possibly make 4 moves in 1 minnute, forcing the 1st player to time out since his timer would start first

WhisperzQ
Subject: Re: Time limits
Firstly, I choose not to play in 1 or 2 day limit games because I cannot guarantee that I can make it onto here every two days (I usually do but the day will come ... :) and if I enter a game or tournament with a longer time frame so be it, I have accepted it. If some wish to play quicker then they may set up their games and/or tounaments that way.
Secondly, I guess the x moves/y days option would have separate time clocks for each party so that if you were losing you could not wait until there was perhaps 5 seconds to go then make your next move (doesn't matter how many moves you have to go) and, voila, your opponent times out, a win from a lose. So the 10/30 could still take 60 days for the first 10 pairs of moves just like say a 3 days/move game.

Subject: Re: Time limits
But Whisperz I think that 10 moves in 30 days with the possibility zu accumulate is very long and if I look at my games against you then I remember that you have not needed so a long time for a move. But we have players here who use the timelimits until the last day for every move and this is not funny to wait two weeks or more.I don`t know why it is necessary to offer a time limit with 30 days for a move?
Serious players will be discouraged with such long time offers.Btw we can lead the "multi games" players(300 and more) to play a little bit fewer games, which is good for the weak performance of the Brainking server.

Subject: The Benefit of Caissus Suggestion
I think the reason why people elect to play in the slower events is that the timer starts ticking as soon as your opponent moves.

So, if you have any type of vacation planned in the months ahead, you have to make sure you have enough time to make each move as if you were actually on your vacation or away from your computer, "just in case" the game spills into your vacation time.

With the N moves in M days approach, you would not have to worry about this at all. Look at the 10 moves/30 days time control. The game starts, you go on vacation for 3 weeks, using up 21 days, and you still have 9 days to make 10 moves when you return. You will not time out.

What would be your alternative here and now? Play 21 days per move.

A big difference.

I might be a lone voice here, but I am happy with the time frame options we currently have here. I can also see merit in Caissus's (that a lot of esses) suggestions but would hope that they would be additional options and not replace the ones we already have.

Subject: Time limits
Regarding the discussion about the reformation of the time limits I want to suggest something that I saw at another server:

There are only four possibilities to choose:

1.Blitzgame: 10 moves in five days
2.Fast game :10 moves in 10 days
3.Regular game: 10 moves in 20 days
4.Slow game: 10 moves in 30 days

With weekends, vacation and perhaps with time accumulating the last suggestion seems to be more than enough for slow player too!

I noticed there has been a completely new board created for "Books & Stories". But what I actually had in mind was for the already existing "Books" DB to be modified (as before the crash) into "Books & Stories" (same description as previous message). Would really appreciate it!

Subject: Draws
Actually I believe that draws "Should" affect the bkr, but they don't. For some reason bkrs are "not" affected by drawn matches.

I believe that this is an error in the system since a low rated player should have his rating rise after a draw and vice versa.

To back my statements up: I was rated about 2000, playing against a 1300. Both of us had played many games. After the draw (doh!) neither rating was affected, much to my amazement (of course i shouldn't complain in this case ;)

I have had a great number of draws, and watched the rating closely each time. Never has it been affected.

WhisperzQ
Subject: Re draws
It is supposed to make a difference but I am not sure that it ever does. What is does effect though is the count for wins, losses and draws. Someone like Dano takes some pride in being over 80% wins.

Some info on BKRs can be found here. The formula is supposed to be:
new BKR = ((old_BKR*Number of Games Played)+ OpponentsBKR + x)/(Number of Games played + 1) where x = +400 for a win / 0 for a draw / -400 for a loss with a failsafe to ensure that winning against a much lower opponent does not decrease BKR. Hope that helps.

niki , a high rated player would lose points in a draw against a lower rated player

Subject: Re: Another End Game Option
but if players are happy to delete a game by mutual consent, would they not be happy to call a draw ? that doesn't affect bkr either .. same result :-)

WhisperzQ
Subject: Another End Game Option
Fencer, I am not sure if you still have this in your "to do" list or whether it was lost, but a previous suggestion was to add another game ending option whereby players would be able to delete a game by mutual consent and have it not be recorded as a game (won, lost or drawn) or effect their BKR. This option might solve some problems which are currently arising where players cannot remember whether they won or lost and do not really wish to continue the game. Of course, this will never happen again ... but .... W:)

now WHERE do you get your ideas about getting the permission from IYT.. they don't "OWN" the game!! it's the same as "Stratego" only others can copy the game as long as they do not use the patent name (Stratego) on there sites.. same goes for BK, they can call ut something different if they like ~OR~ BK can STILL use the exact name (Sabotage) like IYT 'cause there is no lic or patent on "that" name.. Pocket-Monkey has the name "Strategy" (if that's how they spell it) for Stratego and again, it's the same game..
sorry Dmitri King, i don't claim to be an expert on licensing or patents, but this is only common sense.. :)

It would be nice to have a choice of where to go next after resigning a game instead of being automatically sent to the main page, somewhat as if resigning were a normal move, which it is.

I suggest removing the feature of periodic hard drive crashes. It happened on BK...It has happened to me more than once (good thing for backups). It has happened to countless numbers of my customers. Wouldn't life be better if hard drives never crashed?

Well I answered 1/2 of my question. I just tried starting a 5 player tournament (2 games each) - meaning a total of 8 games each.

A pawn who had 8 game slots free was removed from the tournament (SORRY PAWN!)

So now the remaining question is: Do you they have to keep 9 or 10 game slots open?

Hopefully Fencer will answer soon - I like to put into the rules of my games how many game slots a pawn/knight should leave open to enter a tournament!
