Dont you understand at all???? there are millions of people in this world who's biggest worries are weather to eat a booger or a fly with their piece of rice! We dont claim to be perfect, but we are doing it a lot better than most, and most would love to let Usurper eat boogers in a swap for our shoddy health care system

oh... okay, so lets see... the US has been around a bit over 200 years... some of these countries we are talking about have been around for thousands.... but it is because of us that they live in huts and eat boogers and flys with their rice? They were all just thriving robust places to live for centuries until we came along and (BEEEEEEEP!) them all up

It bugs you that people are working to reverse those mistakes and to make these people self reliant?

There are also many newish orgs giving back by buying these countries produce at a fair price, and/or helping them establish a better standard of living. Eg "Fairtrade" and "Rainforest Alliance".

For many years these people have been exploited by companies by paying low rates for their produce. That is really starting to stop. At least over here it is.

No, it doesnt bug me.... but paying to feed someone isnt helping anyone become more self reliant... in fact it makes them less self reliant!

(V): But the fact that people need charities to step in and do things for them to make them more self reliant tells me that there is some underlying problem that should be dealt with first and foremost, and most of the time, that is the central governing body, and most of the time that is some sort of oppressing dictatorship, who hoard their countries riches for themselves, and let us feed their people instead!

my problem with using the bible for debate, is this....
1...the stories were first originated 2-4 THOUSAND years ago.
2...all stories have been re-written numerous times
3...though many idea's seem sound, the vast majority no longer fit in todays world
4...most bible quoters lack their own ideas and use the bible(in whatever version) as a crutch.

Czuch: When we have to feed them it's usually because of a dictator or war.. agreed. Many of these affected people have been after help in terms of someone to step in and bring order, but their cries have been ignored. By us westerners or their own local countries.

Some of the problems relate back to our loan system we use to have with many third world countries, some of the problems were from us trying to make them live like westerners, rather then live with the land and use it properly.

There is a lot to fix and it's not an overnight fix job.

Most of the ideas if applied with an empty cup rather then a full one do work. You see the text was written with many levels of revelation built in.

.... And I use the Bible as well as other good religious texts (eg from Zen, Hinduism, Judaism and even some old Egyptian texts. Good knowledge and wisdom never loses it's power or usability.

(V): Okay, I admit we are not perfect, and I admit that our western way of life is not the answer for all, but for many people you have to start somewhere, and it is a long haul, so for many, they have to suffer today knowing that their suffering will only benefit the future... as a parent you would give up your own life for that of your child, and for some people, it will cost their life for a better life for their children or more accurately, their great grandchildren... boohoohoo, our forefathers suffered for what I have today, many Iraqis will suffer for what they will have tomorrow, at least their suffering now will lead to a better tomorrow and their suffering before was only treading water for them!

The very best solution is to strip the government of all its power and then people will find ways to take care of themselves free from the oppressive influence of the Overlord, whose power is wedded to large corporations & banks for the purpose aggregating ownership & wealth into a few hands. The second best solution is for the enormous power of the government to be directed towards helping lives, not destroying & enslaving lives. But this seems to be impossible in our current situation...and perhaps always, since the nature of strong government is to rule with an iron fist.

I think organized religion is often the antithesis of true spirituality. And Bwild is right, all these scriptures have been doctored, not to mention mistranslated to support various dogmas.

But they still have value. And it doesn't mean, for example, that Jesus the "Christ" or Gautama the "Buddha" didn't teach some of the most sublime truths, or live them.

One shouldn't swallow the whole turkey, nor throw out the baby with the bathwater. "There is no religion higher than Truth," says H.P. Blavatsky. But truth is not only mundane, but also divine.

Only a little reflection tells us that the physical universe, of which our bodies & world are composed, is only the tip of the iceberg.

.... Yet, if one really studies and goes back to the roots, to the early days before the 'Bible' was formed as a step to organise Christianity, there is much to see.

Quite frankly, in America religion has become too much of a business. Some 'preachers' live to good a life I feel, liking the money rather then true saving.

I think the larger issue is materialism over spirituality, which is a fault of all western religions & also western science. Science is changing by degrees as new mysteries are explored and the old pat answers are found to be inadequate.

Eastern religious and philosophical thought is definitely a guiding light both to science & religion in this regard.

In America's case, the word "materialism" ought to be exchanged for "crass materialism" or "gross materialism." You are correct, in that in some of the religious branches, most notably some fundamental (but not all) and some pentecostal (but not all) & charismatic groups, materialism has gained the upper hand until material prosperity is a mark of God's approbation almost beyond anything else, and what's more, God is there like a puppet to answer all prayer for wealth according to the petitioner's faith. As Blavatsky rightly surmised, any kind of prayer or meditation or "magic" for purely selfish motives is necessarily "black magic."

So these TV preachers, the televangelists, the faith healers, these are the con artists that unfortunately all these ignorant Christian masses, none of whom apparently can "discern the spirits," fall prey to & hand over their money for blessings. It's to the point now that any sincere seeker for a spiritual faith, or any disinterested observer, can immediately see through the manipulation & is turned off from Christianity as a result. And that is a shame, because of what you suggest....that "there is much to see," if one knows where & how to look.

From a political standpoint, when people through religion or any other "ism" are encouraged to suspend their critical thinking faculties for a false idea of "faith," they are ripe for exploitation. Thus the mass hypnotists of religion do a service for greedy politicians also, who thrive on a populous who have lost the capacity to think. True "religion" is wedded to philosophy & science, producing a holistic understanding not as easily deceived. But we all have a long way to go.
