Temo: word games?
Hope this hasn't already been discussed, any chance BrainKing could have a "Scrable" type word game? There is a great word game Jamble that is played on another not so great game sight.

BIG BAD WOLF: But that game should be English? Or could everyone choose a language when creating a game of Scabrain?

joshi tm: I would guess Fencer could make different language of the game - depending on if their are different dictionaries of different languages that Fencer can download and use for free. I believe there are at least a few free English language dictionaries - not sure off hand of other languages, but I'm sure there are some.

I don't think he should "mix" different languages in the game, but I don't see why there can't be Scrabble (English), Scrabble (Czech), etc... (of course not called Scrabble.

BIG BAD WOLF: That was because the name ''Scrabble'' was licensed.

joshi tm: I have played scrabble (against a computer) on a couple of sites. The problem I have is that they use dictionaries with words which don't actually exist. I have had "YEUK", "QIVIUT" and "OGRISM" played against me, and I have checked my copy of the Shorter Oxford Distionary and none of these words, or anything like them, appear anywhere. Scrabble is a great game, but it is completely ruined by made-up words which do not occur in ANYBODY's vocabulary. Please save us from scrabble on this site, unless we can use the Oxford or Websters dictionary and not one of those ridiculous dictionaries with words which one must "learn" in order to compete.

pgt: why, of course yeuk exists! it's what I always say when I find anything but carrots for dinner. Ogrism sounds like that mania of a BK player that always insisted on inviting me to a maharadja with me as white. Since he's on my blocked list, I don't know if he's still ogring about. I admit that qiviut has me stumped for the moment, but I'm still recovering from yesterday's excesses. I'm sure I'll come up with something later. I like that game!

rabbitoid: (sigh!)  Well, I suppose you might be right about OGRISM, but I guess if you're into ogrisms it doesn't matter how you spell it.  Perhaps "AhAhAhWOW" would be ok?

But SOD does not allow YUK, YUCK or YEUK, even though I use a word which sounds something like that when calves liver is served.

I also love game, which is why I am making a plea to play it with real words.  My wife and I play several times a week: we have gone right through the SOD (in 1987) and documented all of the allowable 2-letter words, so that there are no arguments.  (And before 1987 I didn't know that an "AI" was a 2-toed south american sloth!)

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/qiviut

Are you saying that because certain words aren't in your vocabulary or known to you, then they're not allowable? This is the whole point of using dictionaries as a reference for allowable words. Is Random House not a good enough source?

The OSD changes every year, so it's quite possible that those 3 words were recent additions. I don't have one on hand, so I can't verify that, however.

jurek: I think the problem with online scrabble is that it's too easy to look up words. When playing scrabble it's fine to put ogrism if you thought of it yourself with no help from a dictionary.

grenv: Actually, in scrabble it is okay to put up any word you want to, even if it isnt in thew scrabble dictionary, then its up to your opponent to challenge the word, if there is no challenge, then even a non word is a legal play!

pgt: no, because the computer probably does not use words that arent in the OSPD....

I would think that a scrabble game here could give us a choice of which dictionary we would use in any particular game? If you wanted to play with words only contained in the oxford standard dictionary, well that would be fine!

Czuch Czuckers: how about Larousse, or Robert? they're the standard french ones :)

My point is, have a look at the upper right part of the screen, you'll see (currently) 16 little rectangles, 15 of which represent good reasons why this kind of game will be very, very difficult to implement on this site.

ßăķëď Äłáşķǻñ: Well I suppose I will just have to admit a vocabulary deficiency. (Actually for scrabble it's not as much use as one might think, because you still need a "U".)
