BerniceC: Cats are much more adaptable than dogs, and I think they understand more too. Dogs are very loyal and stress more with changes. They also pick up on their owners feelings more than cats.

harley: I have just given him a shirt with a tissue in the pocket that I found in the bedroom..it was going to be washed before I dispose of his clothing and he seems to be sleeping happily, but we will wait and see. It doesn't seem to be bothering the cat altho he has gotten more smoochy with me LOLOL....He was Verns cat.

harley: thanks Harley I will try the article of clothing and see what happens....he pooped twice last night...once on a mat that I was able to wash (I put him outside, first time ever at night) and he got up this morning when I let him in and he pooped on the carpet :(

Thankfully I have a good cleaner and there arent any stains.

Foxy when my twins were little I'd put my tree near a wall, then get cotton or string, and in 4 or 5 places tie it around the middle of the tree so you can't see it and pit in to the wall behind. It stopped the tree falling on them if they pulled it.

ScarletRose: They sell a Pine scented spray you can spray the tree with.We usually put ours up about a week before,this year with the baby all over i'm thinking of putting the tree in the play pen.Safety reasons for the tree mind you.Nahhhh i'm worried about the pine needles and her grabbing at the tree.We did this with Gabrielle and it worked out well.

I know its not quite the same Scarlet but there are some beautiful artificial trees these days. And they last for years.

Thankies for all the suggestions.. every year I dread getting that real tree only to having to get a new one a week before Christmas... due to the first one drying out so much..

Either that.. or I wait till a week before to get a tree..

ScarletRose: My husband always re-cuts the tree after we get it home and gets it in a big pail of water.We never put it up too early the heat drys it out.SR we tried all the tricks even the aspirin but constant watering works best for us.Reason for re-cutting is the sap runs to the bottom and reseals itself.

BerniceC: It can sometimes help to put in their basket an item of clothing which would have Vern's scent on it. An old jumper or something. It might make him feel a bit happier.

Theres some quite good advice on this page too;

Good luck with him.

this isnt gardening but.....???

has anybody had personal experience in losing someone thru death?

what have or has been done to console and comfort pets???

My wee Bear (shih-tzu) is pining (sp) for Vern...will not go outside...pee'd on the mat in the night and is generally got a sad hang-dog look.

Im sorry Foxy, but gardening, pets, digging holes, and crap on the lawn seems like it all fits in...*:)*
