its funny how some players are referred to by the BrainKing name and others by their last name. Hmmmm.

Asunto: yes, ugh and trice are rating boons...
but i meant large sample size against different players, not just playing against the same player...that shows a wider skill base. I know of some false accounts of BK that were created to get to the top precisely by that method of playing against the top guys in their first games.

If I had played all my games of loop and gothic against ughaibu and Trice respectively I expect my winning percentages would be lower, without my skill being reduced.

As it happens, my games of 3 checks chess against ughaibu seem to have given me a high rating despite my losing both.

4. Agosto 2004, 17:49:28
redsales
Builder, thanks, I didn't notice that! No wonder. If you don't see how win %ages reveal skill, you need look no further than loop and gothic, seeing the top two players. A win % from a large sample size such as ughaibu and Ed Trice tell me much more than prov ratings based on 4-6 games...sure, the provs may be as good or better, but they haven't really proven it. Statistically it's much easier to get a high rating on BK from a small amount of games.

Redsales: If you're refering to your games in the "For the honest, and friendly, not cheating. (Atomic Chess)" tournament, observe its description: "Unrated games (no BKR will be affected by this tournament): yes"

Let's not confuse unrated games with the real problems with the rating system. :) And I don't see how simple win percentages reveal much about a player's skill.

well, if my chess rating goes up 60 more points, I will be ineligible for tournaments since they usually contain the constraint less than or = 2700 when the rating range is specified.

4. Agosto 2004, 10:34:36

But surely the rating system here is not the rating system everywhere else, its the BK rating system, and is to reflect the players on BK against each other, not against other systems

ethori is a fake account. Also, the ratings here are just wrong but I can accept it. In atomic I beat a 1750 player and lost to a 1988 player when I was rated 1905. Result? ZERO change..in either game. Maybe I'll be 1905 forever. I think the records show the strength best. Ughaibu has lost thrice in over 250 games of tablut, that's unheard of...and Trice hasn't lost. That says a lot more than the ratings.

Pocket-Monkey, another game site, mentions the following: "Elo ratings are not absolute, they are relative, and they're only applicable within a body of players." So I do not expect USCF and Bk ratings to match.

However, I agree there are other problems with the ratings, like draws not counting for enough, and a player's first few games being over-emphasized.

Asunto: ratings system
Who ever said a 2600 BK rating here is equivalent to a 2600 chess rating? It's not and is not meant to be.

4. Agosto 2004, 04:38:27
Grim Reaper
I still think the rating system on here is not correct. I got a draw with Chess Carpenter and there was no change in rating points. That never happens.

And look at Descenter. He was near 2100 when I was about 2200, and he made a losing move on move 5 of our game. There is no 2100 player that I know of that would play so badly, so this system has ratings that are at least 300 points too high, maybe even more.

Another thing is that all of the "early" players were thrown into a pit together. We were all rated 1300, and it took forever just to claw our way to 1600. Now someobody comes on board and beats an overrated 1900 player and they are instantly at 2300.

Does not seem to reflect the way the "real rating" system works.

My overrated chess rating is the perfect example. For 12 years I never broke 2300 in United States Chess Federation play after having made master at age 19. On here, I play for one week, and 2641 sits next to my name.

I really don't think there is much weight to the system, as it is implemented on here.
