Please remember that Hrqls has asked that talk of this specific person should not continue. Abuse of the vacation days policy and solutions in general are welcome topics.

Thank you.

Charles Martel: Well, a few have had suggestions, but I haven't seen any response from Fencer about it. So, I don't know

Fortunately, it's not a wide-spread problem. (As far as people buying memberships over and over again to get a few years' worth of vacation days in one year)

rod03801: I thought the talk was to limit the extra days you can get in one year, sure someone is entitled to buy as many memberships in a year as they please, but the talk as I have mentioned was a limit, maybe such as only an extra ten or fifteen days a year.

(V): Why any extra days anyway? When they are gone, they are gone. Part of the game is the time limits. I oppose any additional days.

(V): No one is being punished Jules. You get X number of vacation days a year. Use them wisely. If you have problems and need more, too bad for you. Stop playing so many games. I don't feel sorry for people who time out in games when they are given enough vacation days a year. It's unfair to other players when people get more days. You get what you get and that's it.

(V):That's life Jules.  No exceptions.  No pity cases.  Part of the games are the time constraints.  If you can't meet them, you time out.  I've played over the board tournaments for years and that's a huge part of the game.  You don't get extra time because you don't feel well.  Nuf with the excuses.  You get so many vacation days a year so use them wisely.

Artful Dodger: No, that's not life. That's an opinion. In the end it'll be up to Fencer and HIS opinion on how the matter is resolved.

It's not a case of "pity", it's a case of real life.

Artful Dodger: there can be many reasons, some examples
- an unexptected longer illness
- an unexpected change of jobs where internet access is more limited than your previous job
- an unscheduled long vacation
- an unexpected illness of a family member
- unexpected computer / provider problems

the policy of vacation days (or even no vacation days) is different per game site

the policy of this site is to allow vacation days .. and at the moment the policy is to allow rebuying of more vacation days

Hrqls:   All good reasons.  All the more reason to use the days you have properly.  To use them as vacations and emergencies is good.   To use them to not time out on games because one has so many games, not good.  Of course I go with the rules of the site.  I just don't favor anyone getting any additional days for any reason.

Artful Dodger: agree .. i manage quite well with vacation days + weekends .. but there might be some events in the future where my normal amount might not be enough .. even if i wouldnt spend any vacation days at all during the rest of the year (i think i (brain rook) have 30 days per year ? thats 6 weeks .. which can easily be taken away by some of the points i named below

for normal days/years the amount of vacation days is plenty .. for those unlucky ones its possible to buy extra days

those who buy extra days even while they are not unlucky .. hmm .. let them be .. it doesnt matter to you .. the only ones it would matter to are pawns as those 'endless' games take up a game slot .. for rooks (and certainly for a block rook like you) 1 extra game in the waiting list in which its your opponents move should not make a difference

i agree though that a limit on the amount of vacation days would be nice .. but i can live and still be happy if it stays unlimited like it is right now .. why bother ? better have fun with what you do have :)

Hrqls:  Good points and in the end, I can live and be happy with whatever the policy is.  It really doesn't negatively affect me anymore as it once did.

I did have one thought after reading your previous posts.  If someone was having serious problems with their ISP or if they were long term hospitalized, I see no reason not to place a temporary adjounment to their games (for a limited amount of time) without the bother of having to buy more vacation time.  Seems to me these types of situations would be few and far between.  I know that if my ISP went down, I'd have multiple options to connect and send a message to Fencer.  And if hospitalized, same thing.  Plus, many people simply use their comptuters from their hospital bed.  Exceptions like the ones you bring up are good ones.  But I suspect that too often the vacation days are used as time out insurance.  And if a person uses them that way, then when they truly need them (for real emergencies), and they have none left, no one is to blame but themselves.  I suspect this would most often be the case.

If you have multiple options to connect, you might as well play.

Artful Dodger: true that these situations wont occur that often ... but neither are many people abusing it

personally i do need 1 batch of vacation days per year for sure .. to be able to go on vacation(in fact its something that i do miss a lot on dialygammon .. on there i have to make someone else play for me while i am away .. that doesnt feel right) .. but it might happen somewhere in the future that i might be glad to have the possibility to buy some more .. but thats just me

i think the vacation days system on this site is great .. and better than what most sites have ... too bad though that its abused by a few people .... i have rather this with a little abusing that none at all though

rod03801:I don't think it's so much a matter of abuse as of thoughtlessness.  People should not be subject to criticism for following the rules of the site.  The rules can always be changed if they don't suit the majority of users.  However, deliberately delaying matches is rudeness, another term for which is unsportsmanlike behavior, and that can legitimately be criticized.
