The quote is attributed to Lyndon Johnson by Ronald Kessler in his
book ?Inside the White House?.

On the amazon site you will see a reviewer writes ?Once, while on a
trip with two governors, Johnson reportedly made the following comment
in explaining why the civil rights bill was so important to him. He
said it was simple: ?I'll have them niggers voting Democratic for two
hundred years.? ?

The quote is also mentioned on Page 6 of ?Can America Survive? by Ben
Stein, Phil DeMuth.
The search inside facility (?200 years?) will take you to the relevant page.

One blogger reports that the quote in the book is third-hand.

?To be fair, the Lyndon B. Johnson quote is third hand, reportedly
said by Johnson to two governors aboard Air Force One. The
circumstances are reported in Robert Kessler's book Inside the White
House.?

Jim Dandy: ?? It was ok to be racist in the sixties? Slavery was a different time too. But it was still an evil practice.

I am Weasel: ok to be racist? I think that depends on ones opinion, I personally don't find it ok.Certain words did take awhile to be deemed politically incorrect though.

Jim Dandy:  Neither do I.  Lyndon Johnson said a lot of crude and assinine things.  Tapes on him were worse than Richard Nixon at times.  He may have thought he won the black vote with the signing of the Civil Rights legislation, but he also realized that he would loose the Southern white vote for generations to come.  That sadly proved true of my home region.  All of the white racists flocked to the Republican Party in droves.  The GOP did not become the radical right party it is today by accident.  The Weasel is right though, it wasn't always that way.

Say what you want about Johnson being a racist.  It is likely true.  But, he did promote and sign a lot of Civil Rights legislation.  Even my Republican hero, Abraham Lincoln, made some comments that would be deemed as racists today.  He had some doubts about signing the Emancipation Proclamation.  But, the point is that he did it anyway cause it was the right thing to do.  Johnson was also aware of political consequences for signing Civil Rights legislation, but he did it anyway.

Tuesday: The reason it's been pounded to pieces is because you on the left refuse to accept that your party was born out of racism. It promoted, supported, and profited from racism. And they are still using race today to further their ideology. Whatever it takes, the left will do.

It's also CURRENT in the news. Don't like the topic? Don't read it or respond.

Tuesday: I'm speaking more of the leadership of the Democratic party (historically) but today, the far left uses race all the time. They look for opportunities (or as I have shown, they manufacture them) to accuse the opposition of racism. That's why the topic is important. One, to understand the roots of racism in the political parties; to be honest about it; and to call it what it is when confronted with it today.

Williams letter was NOT racist. Poor judgment, insulting, offensive. But let's NOT cheapen the meaning of racism by assigning every little thing we object to as racist. That kind of behavior IS racist. When one uses race as a club (as the far left does) they are acting racist. When someone quotes LBJ for using the "N" word, they are NOT racist (as I have been called by you and a few others here). You yourself are guilty seizing an opportunity to play the race card. It's nonsense. Racism is a particular thing and not just anything you think it is. It's not racist to say Obama is articulate. Some on the left have made this claim. It's not racist to oppose Obama. MANY on the left make this claim.

The NAACP is playing the race card. They are a racist organization. Why? Imagine a white organization that seeks only to promote the white race. That's racism.

Jim Dandy: Don't have to do that. It's my opinion. Maybe his letter is reflective of a man who really has racist beliefs. I don't know. But reading that letter, I don't see racism. I see something else.
