 Languages

Ask questions or just talk about different languages. Since BrainKing is an international game site supporting many languages, this board can be kind of useful.

Since we will be dealing with pronunciation of words rather than their spelling, I think it's useful to have a link to The sounds of English and the International Phonetic Alphabet.

To see translations of some frequently used phrases and sentences in other languages see Languages

Fencer: nice!

maybe another idea would be to have the poster place the code in between a certain code which then would be parsed by the site when someone reads it and shown in the language they have selected to view the site

for example you post [lang]"diky"[/lang] and i would read "dank u wel"
(the site will see you write in czech as you have czech selected as your language, so it looks up your text in the czech list, and then translates it to dutch as thats the language i have selected

it might be tough though as the site wont find "diky" in the czech list as its missing some accents .. and therefore would still show it as "diky" to me as its unknown to the site :)

Another suggestions:

  • I don't really speak this language.. I think this may come in handy when someone replies to you in the language you used and you don't know what they're saying.
  • Going on holidays. Won't play for a while.
  • Could you please make a move on game abc?

Mr. Shumway: Sure thing.  Let's first have a list of what people may want to know in every language, and when the list is complete, each native speaker of a language can create a post and give us the equivalents.  And I'll put the links up here!

O čem je toďten plk: Re:
Walter Montego: It would even be better to put the link to a thread, not to a post! Then we could split it up in different posts. One post for each phrase or one post for each language. I personally think that one for each language would be more comfortable for searching. Also every post could then be made by a native speaker, so that they wouldn't have to be updated by Reza one by one. We would have a representative for every language :)
Great idea, yoyoudax :)

O čem je toďten plk: Re:
yoyudax: It's easy enough to do here without too many tricks. You put into a post box just like this one the things you want in it. Then King Reza puts a link to it in the title or header at the top of this page. Then all of us can view the page and it can be updated or added to as more phrases come up.

Is there is a list at BK of how to say certain phrases like "GOOD GAME" OR "CONGATULATIONS" etc, in all or some of the languages used here. If not it would be a worthwhile list to compile.

I am fully aware of how embeded questions are made, like:

Do you know?
What time is it?

Do you know what time it is ?

B
ut I heard a sentence in a movie : What do you think the cure for cancer is?

I think at least in this very example, the other option is possible too.  So it can be said as:

What do you think is the cure for cancer?

Am I right?

Last night I came by a sentence like this:

It's Lui the sixth's throne.

I was wondering if the native speakers really pronounce all the 5 consonants that I have shown in red.  It's really difficult for me to pronounce them all, though not impossible.  I really have to concentrate to pronounce them fully and without a mistake!

O čem je toďten plk: A huge thank you to PhatPlaya for the translation
this was the translation he gave me - at least i can tell anyone who asks what it means now

The large character in the red circle
The calligraphy of this character is a little unusual. Usually characters in good Chinese calligraphy are supposed to fit inside a square. I looked through the different databases because the character was hard to find. The closes I could come up with was:
有, yǒu, to have, to possess (complex pictograph of a right hand grasping the abundance of the moon)

The white characters inside the circle
土, tǔ, earth, soil (pictograph of an object rising through the earth)
水, shuǐ, water, river (pictograph of streams flowing together)
木, mù, tree, wood (pictograph of a tree)
食, Shí, food, eat (complex pictograph containing the pictographs for gather, rice and spoon)

The red characters in the vertical stamp
The only unusual character was the second one from the top. That character seems to be the pictograph for fire.
木, mù, tree, wood (pictograph of a tree)
火, huǒ, fire (pictograph of rising flames)
水, shuǐ, water, river (pictograph of streams flowing together)
食, Shí, food, eat (complex pictograph containing the pictographs for gather, rice and spoon)

Fiona: I've asked a couple people if they can do the translation for you. It might be hard since art can be anything, especially if stylized for looks. Reza had a link to some old Persian art that was neat looking, but made of writing. It will take someone fluent in Chinese to give it a go if it's anything like that.

I have the feeling those translation machines are really bad at Chinese to English. :)
