Do you miss something on BrainKing.com and would you like to see it here? Post your request into this board! If there is a more specific board for the request, (i.e. game rule changes etc) then it should be posted and discussed on that specific board.
Fencer, once you said that an "ignore feature" (so you can mute who you dont want to read messages from on the dbs) could be added in the future.
Is it on your "to do list"?..i know it has nothing to do with playing the games :)
I'd appreciate, 1) that players who haven't finished at least one game during the last six months aren't displayed in BK's default rating list of that particular game. I.e.: 1.1) By default BK's rating list should display only players who are still playing and who are still interested in this game. 1.2) For historical reasons an additional rating list option "show all ratings" (including inactive players) would be useful.
Furthermore I'd appreciate, 2) that the rating of a player who has stopped playing a particular game "decreases by time". For example: Not having finished at least one game during the last 3 months AND not having at least one running game, counts as about one lost game in terms of rating.
My suggestion: Inactive players' BKR should be decreased by 1% per month, i.e.: A 2000-player will lose 20 points/month (or 5 points/week), a 1500-player 15 points/month (or 4 points/week), if he isn't playing and hasn't played at least one game during the last 3 months.
It 'd encourage players to defend their BKR, 'd help to keep the rating list up-to-date, and historical ratings 'd be still visible via the "show all ratings" option.
Example: The rating of a 2000-player 'd drop to 1980 after 3 months of inactivity, to 1921 (after 6 months), to 1864 (after 9 months) and to 1827 (after 12 months). Those of a 1500-player to 1485 (after 3 months), 1440 (6 mon), 1398 (9 mon) and 1370 (12 mon). A 1000-player: 990 (3 mon), 960 (6 mon), 931 (9 mon) and 913 (12 mon).
I would not like to see a rating drop just because a player is not playing that game anymore - why should they be pentelized for things like no internet access for long periods of time, but would like to come back and play later down the road.
What I would like to see is possible after 2-3 mounts without a finished game of a game type, that their rating is simply "hidden" from the Ratings page. That way if they do come back and play again, they can simple start where they left off and their "hidden" rating will become visable again.
When I'm looking at the rating list of a particular game, my main interest is to find players/potential opponents, who are still interested in that game. And who 'll maybe accept a game invitation.
I assume that someone, who haven't played at least one game during the recent months, have lost his interest in that (particular type of) game.
Thus I suggest, that inactive players should NOT be listed at the rating list of that particular game by default anymore. (And I appreciate to add a new option / filter criterium "show all users", which includes inactive players.)
In my opion it 'd be useful to define "inactive player" as: Has currently no running game (of that particular type) AND has not finished at least one game (of that particular type) during the last 120 days.
frs: What "other BK developers"? I am the only one :-D
I plan to add a script which will check the ratings once a day and hide all players who didn't complete a game within last 3 months.
A game could go on for a lot longer period than three months. Someone could be hidden from the ratings even if they are actively playing a game of that type.
Also someone like me who has ratings in lots of different games might not play some gametype for a long time. Even if you are playing actively there are too many types of games to keep on playing all of them all the time :) I wouldn't like it if my rating was hidden from a game i play rarely.
How about a message a week or so before ratings are about to be hidden to warn the player? I play all game types, and wouldn't be able to keep up with my ratings. Or, on the profile, some time keeper saying "you have X amount of time to complete a game before your rating becomed hidden"
BBW's suggestion of 'show all' could be available only for paying members, another incentive to buy membership.
There are old nics that I had from the KM days which are still there inactive. I gave the password and accounts to other people so I can't even log on and request that they be deactivated. But I think Fencer could get them out of there with the touch of a button.
at the game notes field (which is not visible for the opponent).
Unfortunately the default font type of game notes is a proportinal one, i.e. each character is displayed with an indivial length.
I already tried to enclose my notes into <TT> </TT> and <CODE> </CODE> HTML tags which are usually displayed mono-spaced, but I didn't work: BK seems to ignore or escape these tags ...
There is currently no mono-spaced
font on BrainKing, but
I would LOVE to see were we
could use it. It would
make it a lot easier to create
different "art".

Would there be a way to add Mah Jongg solitaire to the site? It would be a game to play in breaks between turns and if you wanted to you could post high scores to see who is leading. nice
I second thatspicieangel. I know this is a turn based site so I don't know how Fencer will feel about implementing solitaire games but you make a good point! :-)
I personally think there are plenty of sites on the internet where you can play solitaire type games already, and I would much prefer Fencer spend time coding new multi-player, turn based games.
I spoke to Fencer a while a go about single & multi-player games.
He has them on his list but wanted to make sure BK 2.0 was fully stable before for starting on something else major (as we all know there are still bugs about).
He did also mention the need still for a better server as there would be more players here at the same time, if they did not have a normal game to play they would be playing solitaire games.
I love the idea and think it would be an asset to the site, as the players would still be within BrainKing, which can only be a good thing.
*think someone could take 'Outbreak' off GT lol* :-)
we used to have the option to play a game later (i dont think it actually ever worked correctly though), could it be possible to pass on a game ,even if it was only for an hour at a time , when trying to get rid of a backlog of moves and a game keeps appearing that you would like to have more time to think about your next move ,it would be nice to be able to play it later rather than it keep appering in the way .
Even though I would rather see you spend more time creating new games, I'll suggest this anyway just in case it is something that wouldn't be to hard to do.
For the discussion board, it is nice to have the option of "approve pawns post", but as seen in other board pawns are normally not the problem - it is usually just 1 or 2 people.
Right now we are able to ban & hide a user - but how about a 3rd option - "Need approval" option. That way their post will go to the "need approval" list just like the pawns do in the "Pawns need approved" Mode.
Could we please have a seperate folder in the message boxes where we can keep things we don't want to lose. It would take up no more storage room than is presently being used since things are allready being stored in the main message box. Or you could put a limit on the space available. It would be nice to clear out the main message box and also have a safe place to keep things so they wouldn't get accidently deleted.
