Tuesday: This is what I got off Wikipedia. I often call my husband a cat whisperer because of how cats react to him. The meanest ornary cats will curl up at his feet and purr and want a belly rub
(Nice to see you back BTW!)

A horse whisperer is a horse trainer who adopts a sympathetic view of the motives, needs, and desires of the horse, based on modern equine psychology. The term goes back to the early nineteenth century when an Irish horseman, Daniel Sullivan, made a name for himself in England by rehabilitating horses that had become vicious and intractable due to abuse or accidental trauma. He kept his methods secret, but people who managed to observe him noticed that he would stand face to face with the troubled horse. They seemed to think that he must be saying something to the horse in a way the horse could understand and accept because the horses were quickly gentled by his mysterious techniques. His techniques were passed over to Willis J. Powell, who learned them well and traveled widely in the New World to help the most seriously traumatized horses. His fame spread, and more and more people sought help from him. He wrote his own book and later cooperated with John Solomon Rarey. Rarey was protective of the tradition he had thus learned, and in early versions of his own book did not reveal how the most severely traumatized horses were salvaged by the methods originated by Sullivan and passed to him by Powell. He did, however, always give Powell full credit for his methods of gentling horses. Finally he became convinced that it was better to reveal the secret method to the world than to risk its loss. That method is fairly faithfully represented in the novel and motion picture The Horse Whisperer.

The first horse whisperer is thought to have been Xenophon. Today, numerous trainers and clinicians call themselves horse whisperers, often building on the work of Daniel Sullivan, Willis J. Powell, and John Solomon Rarey in the 1850s. The early twentieth centuries exponents of securing the horse's cooperation by kindness include Tom Dorrance, and somewhat later Ray Hunt.

Tuesday: If everyone did as you and got their cats fixed when they got them and if possible kept them indoors we wouldnt have the big problem with wild cats. It's such a shame to see wild cats in the city, breeding disease etc. The over population is sooo high here. If I could take them all in I would.

Tuesday: I grew up in a major city on the east coast where I spent some time volunteering at the SPCA - they had to "put down" forty-thousand animals a year on average because of over-population - every animal I have ever shared a home with has been fixed because of what I saw there - when you think about getting a pet, please think about adoption, they REALLY need you

srnity: Ya it is sad how many are put down each year. The shelter for homeless animals here near me turns down at least 40 kitties a day. That is soo sad.

Tuesday Arent cats kool? Once youve been around cats you notice how different they all are and what personalities they have. Like kids!

Onderwerp: An average on home less animals
Not sure how acurate this is now because this stat is from about 10 years ago so I'm sure the numbers are now higher...but 10 years ago to give every cat in the US a home...each person (not family...each PERSON) would have to take in 21 cats and 7 dogs....that would mean a family of 4 would have to take in 84 cats and 28 dogs.Breeding can be done if it is done RESPONSIBLY...letting your animals slip out and opps, your pregnant is not a way to go about it.If all the unwanted pregnancies alone were avoided, imagine how many less unwanted there would be.I think a big problem is also when the "newness" of the pup or kitten wear off of most people and the animals get into their "terrible 2's" they just give up and get rid of the animal.

WatfordFC: The best you can probably find in this country is a lower-cost vet who may help out of charity, that and a lot of cities offer cheaper vet services...For ALL animals sake I wish people here would volunteer their time at a "real" animal shelter, it has changed me for life, I will never, ever "buy" a pet again, not with so many thousands sitting there waiting to be exterminated, a mutt, a stray, or an older animal has just as much love (if not more) to give...but sadly, in America, we always seem to want what we perceive as the "best" for ourselves instead of looking at the bigger picture

WatfordFC: I truely do not know of any that will just do it for free, which is a shame. My nieghbor just made the comment that she wanted to take a stray female in to get fixed but just can't afford it.So,because a vet will not donate their time, she will probably keep reproducing.
I must say that we bougth Damien..I had hubby talked into buying him and then going to a shelter to get a second dog but the kennel owner talked him out of it (AUGH!!!!) We DID make sure to get him though from a reputable breeder..I did a crap load of research in general but also on him,and the kennel.Their are so many animals that need help, still wish we would get a pound puppy.

anastasia: 2 years ago i opened my front door and found my ickle mtisy-moo in a box, just left on my dorr step, to be honest i was reluctant at first, having 2 boys already i wasnt too sure how they would react, but Jessica (my daughter) slowly introduced her to them and they were fine. Mitsy was riddled with fleas and was quite poorly, took her to the vets, and a quick drenching of flea sparay, and anti-biotic injection and she is wonderful. I am so glad i kept her and not taken her to the Cats Protection League.

Many of you know that Steve Erwin was killed today during a diving accident off of the coral reef.A stingray stuck him through the heart,he was 44 and leaves behind his wife and 2 kids.I know there is a post of this on the main chat board but I wanted a speacial post for him here,on our board.
Steve was dedicated to helping animals of all kinds and educating people on animals...he was a great man and and endless worker in the protection of animals..he will be sadly missed. The only silver lining is that he died doing what he loved to do,and that was being with the animals.May your God take care of you in your passing and help your family through this difficult times...our thoughts are with them all.
