Jim Dandy: Of course it will not. Its much cheaper to get better features on a (non-Apple) laptop. Only the believers in Steve-church will be buying it.
Jim Dandy: No no, its not all hype. All Apple products i have used have been excellent in their area. I'm sure iPad will be an very good product. And Steve is the god of marketing. Surely it will be appealing to some people, even outside of Steve-cult.
But it is not really going to compete with laptops, thus it will not "push them off the cliff". It does not have enough features to do that. Who is really going to need a thingy that will have less features than a decent laptop and it'll be much harder to bring along with you than a mobile phone?
puupia: I mentioned the laptop comparison because I've read (watched) it being done by a few computer reviews the last few days. The conclusion seems to be that the iPad won't leave the laptop in its dust, for many of the reasons you point out, but it does have the potential to take a decent bite out of its market share.
Jim Dandy: I really doubt about that decent market share. If you consider 1-2% decent it just might happen.
But we will see in few days when the first iPads hit the market. Surely most of the very first buyers will be Steve's disciples, so we can't really trust the first impressions.

The IPad is not a laptop.
And it is - right now - poorly equipped!
There is no camera, no card-reader and not even an USB-Slot in it!
Right now, its just an object of prestige, an adults toy.
As a professional creative, i am using apple products for over 25 years now,
and i agree in the superb quality of the hardware, and the better stability of the operating system.
But as far as the IPad is concerned, i can tell you all to wait at least one year from now on if you think to buy it.
It wont push any laptop of the cliff (neither apple nor non-apple laptops) as long as the multimedia-abilities are that poor.
The apple leaders dont put a memory-card-reader inside to avoid storage-extension. It comes with a poor amount of GB though. If you, for example, simply want to import the pics of your non-apple digital camera, you need to buy additional adaptors cause there is no serial USB slot. You cant use videoconferencing cause there is no camera..... .
The touch-screen-technique is innovative and enjoyable. Not more.
(V): IM USING FIREFOX NOW FOR ONCE IT HASNT CLOSED DOWN ON ME BUT IVE HAD 6 DIFFERENT POP UP PAGES IN THE 5 MINS IVE HAD IT RUNNING IM DOING A FULL SCAN OVERNIGHT BUT I STILL RECKON ITS TO DO WITH FIREFOX ITSELF
I SHOULD ADD THAT POP UP BLOCKER IS ENABLED ON FIREFOX
Snoopy: You say you have pop-ups disabled, but check if someone didn't define exceptions. It's under options->contents, you have the checkbox for "block pop-ups", and on the same line a button "exceptions", where you can define which sites are allowed pop-ups. I remember there was a malware that filled that "exceptions" part with loads of sites. So even if you get rid of the malware, the exceptions are still there.
I have been having NOTHING but trouble with slow slow slow Brainking. My browser would always say "waiting for Brainking" so naturally I thought it was just here. But, I started to notice that other sites were running as slowly. So, I used my guest account on this computer thinking it was all the stuff that loads on my main account. Nope, still ran badly. Sooooo I switched to Google Chrome just for fun. And guess what? Everything is faster than lightening. So I guess it is in my FireFox browser. What could cause it to run so slowly? Is it that script checker??? It's way too annoying. I can go from page to page now at the click and load time is in a blink. ;)
Even though it was only released just over 3 years ago, Microsoft have just ended support for the original version of Windows Vista. This means that if you are still using the original version of Vista and have not upgraded to Vista Service Pack 1 or 2, your Windows system will no longer qualify for support from Microsoft, including hotfixes to patch bugs and security problems. This means that if you use Vista you will need to upgrade to at least Service Pack 1 (although Service Pack 2 recommend) in order to keep your Vista system secure.
The 13th of July will also see the end of support for XP systems running Service Pack 2, meaning that if you are still using XP, you will need to upgrade to Service Pack 3 in order to keep receiving security fixes and updates. If you aren’t sure which version of XP or Vista you have, you can quickly check as follows:
1. Press [Windows Key] + [R]. 2. Type WINVER and click OK. 3. The service pack version installed on your system will be displayed. Click OK to close the window.

MadMonkey: ty for the important info. i don't have time right now to go up and check the xp laptop. can you please give me the service pack code for that one?
If you have Automatic Updates switched on you should be fine
Turn on Automatic Updates
The best way to obtain Windows XP SP3 is to turn on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP. To turn on the Automatic Updates feature, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Copy and paste, or type the following command, and then press ENTER: sysdm.cpl 3. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the three options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) option, and then choose the time that you want under Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them. 4. Click OK.
ellieoop: If you've had automatic update on you'll be automatically upgraded.
If you do a check as Madmonkey said..
1. Press [Windows Key] + [R]. 2. Type WINVER and click OK. 3. The service pack version installed on your system will be displayed. Click OK to close the window.

I'm wondering it is safe to actually download the new version now? I'm on Firefox. Also, I have a abode flash plug-in that keeps crashing on me on certain game sites. Is there a way to fix it or would I have to redo the adobe flash player?
TigerCat: I'm not sure which "new version" you're asking about. IE9? I've been happily using IE8 on a couple of machines here for more than 1 1/2 years, and can't think of any safety concerns specific to that version.
wetware: IE 8...I didn't know about IE9 . The last time I tried downloading IE8, there was so many things wrong w/ it that I had to get a repairman out.
Don't try downloading the new version of flash player & flash plug in 10...there is a bug. It would crash & then yopu have to reload each time. I'm wondering, how in the heck do I get back to 9.0? I went to the abode site & downloaded the zip file to get it. When I go to re-install it, it would take me to the site & they have #10 instead of 9.0
I've heard that Adobe is known to freely share their info with other companies via cookies etc. I believe someone here once mentioned an alternative to Adobe? I don't know how concerned I should be... I just had my little laptop reset so I have to download everything again, thought this might me a good time to investigate the Adobe issue. I know I'll need some kind of flash plug in too. Any input from all you computer experts on Adobe? Thanks!
With the information I've read (do your research) I can overclock my CPU at a decent rate for about £10... ie just upgrade the heatsink/fan from ebay. It also can lead to you upgrading your cpu for a relatively cheap price (off ebay again) and thanks to a good fan/heatsink, increase the capability.
when I go from game to game,,,and sometimes move to move in a game,,a new window pops up"" unable to open this internet site.the requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."" THIS BUGS ME....it does it in my upstairs computer sometimes,,,and my laptop and at my work computers. ALSO in pond games,,I can only make my guess and go to main page,,,cannot go to next pond game ,,or it says the same thing in same window and disconnects me. All I do is press Back and I am back in though,,,but it is steadly getting worse. Any ideas????? I have Windows 7 and I am not as knowledable in this as in windows XP for settings,,,put my comp upstairs and laptop and work computers are all XP and having similar problems
Gammonator: When something like this happens, I always check host-tracker to make sure it is just a local problem, not a BrainKing one. Right now, the average response time (according to that site) is 0.61 seconds and only 2 places show a little higher latency - Thailand and Iran.
In other words, something is wrong on your side. It can be anything - DNS issues, proxy server caching problem, routing problem etc.
Can you post a traceroute output here? Open a command line in Windows and type "tracert brainking.com".
All USB-peripherals i connect with WIN7 (on various USB-ports, different USB-cards, some on the motherboard, some not) are recognized _sometimes_ and after a while the OS refuses to know them.
Restart..
Sometimes i can print 1 page or scan 1 pic, and thats it.
Many people in different communities tell the same. Any experiences?
diogenysos: A common problem with mobos with Nvidia chipset.
Reboot wiill have no effect as it does not reload the drivers.
You can try A. Switch and UNPLUG computer from power for about 5 mins. Restart.
If that does not improve then try the MS temporary fix is: B. From the command prompt run as administrator 1) Type "bcdedit /set truncatememory 0x80000000" (no quotes) 2) Reboot 3) Go to control panel -> System and Security -> view amount of RAM and processor speed. - It should report 4GB (2GB available)
To undo this temp fix (when MS issue a patch), open the command prompt again: 1) Type "bcdedit /deletevalue truncatememory" (no quotes) 2) Reboot 3) Go to control panel -> System and Security -> view amount of RAM and processor speed. - It should report 4GB
I recently installed a new hard drive for my dell lap top.... apparently didnt partition any pace to install media direct.... now when I try to make a partition, I get a warning that if I do, all my data on the hard drive will be lost????
Czuch: Yeah, but if I understand it correctly, the hard drive is new, and thus empty, so no data will be lost ;)
The partioning software cannot know with certainty though, whether there isn't anything on the drive, or whether it's in a file system it doesn't recognize, so it just warns you about it.
Well it was new... but the media direct wanst a priority ;(
Is my only option to let it wipe clean and start again? or forget about media direct install? The reason I even thought about it, is because I cant get it to read and play a dvd ....
