How do I get into these situations??? Cloning Backgammon (Czuch Czuckers vs. Luke Skywalker)
I cant get a double when in a race to save my life.... yet twice today I have gotten doubles that have completely ruined my game!!!

grenv: Yeah, so you like the cube because it takes some of the luck out of the game, yet you think luck is part of the game so any game that eliminates some luck is silly? I think it would make a nice variant, and the more I have thought about it, there would be some added strategies not present in a traditional backgammon game!

Okay, I am the inventor of an official new backgammon variant.

Its called Czuch Backgammon.... It is the same as a normanl backgammon game, except that once a game becomes a race, whomever is in the lead is declared the winner. In the event that it takes only one die to make the game a race, the other die is not used. (doubling cube rules to follow soon)

13. januar 2007, 21:46:13
Czuch
Is there currently any variants that exclude the race portion of the game? I am so sick of having the dice kill me in a race!!!

Maybe not use doubles during a race or just having the winner declared whomever is in the lead when the game becomes a race??? Does this make any sense?

rod03801: It seems to me that the strategy is to sometimes avoid hitting an opponent when in a normal game you would hit them? Then, sometimes if you are behind, you might want to leave many pieces uncovered, to force your opponent to hit you? I think it is less of a hazard to have men left open, especially in the early positions, and try extra hard to make a block by your home base, then force your opponent to make a hit on you and back them up, something like that. But then sometimes, i try to play it a lot like a normal game, and get it to a race as soon as possible!

grenv: yeah... I dont like the cubed games really, since you can easily get 50 points in one game! Plus i agree, some of my games have gotten ridiculous, and when you get behind, the only strategy is to try to drag out the game by adding as many pieces a s possible...

Emne: cloning questions....
Does anyone completely understand the point scoring? After reading the rules, i am still confused? Can both players score points in a game, or only the person who wins? Also, how do the normal gammons and back gammons come into play ina cubed match?

It seems strange, I just got 58 points in a 5 point match in the first game? Does thiS MAKE SENSE TO PLAY IT THAT WAY?

Any help will be appreciated!

That is very frustrating for someone who plays fast and is here everyday!

I was having a conversation about luck and backgammon in a game recently.... I am told that luck plays 90% roll in backgammon. But to me luck is a 50 50 thing and even if it is a 99% thing in this game, it shouldnt matter, since we will all be equally lucky, and its the other 10% or 1% of the game that really matters? How are there world class players if the game is all about luck? I understand that luck can allow someone like me to beat a world class player in a game, which isnt possible in chess, for example. But it seems to me that luck is not as important as skill in backgammon, since luck will even out for all players in the long run?

Emne: Re: Single-elimination tourney seeding
playBunny: I dont know the true rational, but in all of my sporting experience it is the most common bracketing that I have encountered. Generally in these situations though, the teams get their ranking by playing each other as part of a league or conference or the like.

For example NCAA college basketball tournament getting ready to start soon here, takes the top 64 ranked teams (basically) and pits #1 ranked vs #64 and so on down the line. Tennis is international and does similar in their tournaments. It seems to be quite common, and the ratioonaol seems to be that if you have earned the highest ranking to begin with you deserve to play in the finals against the number two ranked payer unles someone is able to upset someone along the way.

One point, in college basketball for example, your ranking is not in jepardy if you get upset as it is the last game of the season for you. In backgammon tournament here, your ranking is effected by an upset from a lower ranked player.

I think for a backgammon tournament here, set up likie this, it should be a 7 or 9 game match to make it more likely that the better player will not get upset.

Emne: Re:
playBunny: I dont know.... playing the number one ranked payer is always the toughest match possible no matter what your ranking is, if you are the nuber 2 ranked player playing against number 1 is the toughest possible match for you, why should number 2 have to play number one first, or anyone sle? Somebody has to play against number 1 first!

Czuch
I think the only objection to that type of set up would be because high rated backgammon players who try to protect their rating by avoiding games against low rated player because of the "luck" factor in backgammon, would be forced to play low rated players and risk losing a lot of rating points because of it.

Why should the 5th ranked player have to play a tougher match than the 8th rank player?

Emne: Re: Distribution in tournaments
playBunny: There are many tournaments where this is the standard method.... tennis comes to mind, top seed plays the lowest seed, and if all the higher rated players wins then the top two seeds wont play each other until the finals!

Will someone take a look at this game and tell me about Sergeys last move here?

He is ranked quite high so I assume he knows what he is doing, but to me, since he doesnt have to gammon me why would he take such a chance on this move? It seems to have worked out for him, but I was surprised he didnt just cover up and go from there? to leave me with a chance to hit him back and even get a 6 1 seems really risky to me. But maybe thats why I dont do so well at this game? Thanks for your input!

Hrqls: am not an expert, but my opinion is that you have to take as many off now as possible, and hope for a double 6s next turn, as double 6s is as likeley as any other roll you may get.

Is it against the rules here to have a program assess a situation to help determine the probability to get a gammon or if a double should be offered?

Hrqls: You cant resign without seeing your next roll.... it was double twos, I think! That game should have been a gammon for me and we should be tied at 4 each, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

It is a good example tha a back game can win, but that will only happen once every 25 situations or so, although that number seems too high to me.
