Emne: bkr shown on discussion boards
i loved it when the corresponding bkr was shown next to someones name when he/she posted something on that board

now most boards are about groups of games so a single bkr cant be shown anymore .. would it be possible to show some sort of average bkr of the corresponding group for that player (like the average bkr of both froglet games or when that player only played 1 variant show the bkr itself) ?

Emne: Request for slower connections
This may be a bit technical for some, sorry for that:

On the DoMove page, when you submit the move you are making on a game, the submit button is before the combobox and a few other input values. One of those inputs is the game ID (g).
On a slow connection, because of the combobox options, the submit button is sometimes visible before the end of the form. When I'm on a really slow connection (which luckily doesn't happen often) impacient as I am, I click the submit button when it shows, before the rest of the form has been sent to my browser. In this situation I get sent back to the main page and no move is made. I then have to reload the whole board and do my move once again.
I'm not sure if the option in the combobox is absolutely necessary for the move to be submited but I'd say that the game id definitelly is ;)

So could the hidden input with the game id be placed before the submit button? Maybe this nasty side effect would go away...

THE HIT MAN: Actually I feel free to talk about it here. Since you haven't posted to this board in over three weeks not counting a little quip about selling your brain last May 6th (Hmm, you'll need a buyer) I think you have a lot of gall to complain about us requesting a Chess notation not currently available on this site and to demand the moderator stop us from discussing it. Just what is the point of your post? Did you even read my last one? Or'd you just feel like blowing your horn? As you can tell from reading it, I had more or less dropped the subject with that post. Maybe grenv or someone else might've replied to it, but I'm sure we had said what we had to say about it and unless Fencer had some more questions about implementing it, I doubt if you'dve heard any more from us.

grenv: In your example you noted that it's B-B5 and not B-QB5. This is one of those short cuts that were always done. Algebraic does it too. There's really no reason not to put the Q there, it's just that it is rarely done. I like leaving no doubt. It makes the game a lot easier to follow in one's head. That's why I use the long algebraic form. I wish they'd put the P for Pawn too. Everyone's always trying to take shortcuts and thinks they're so smart avoiding redundancies. What's an extra letter when it completely removes all doubt about it? The short algebraic is the worst for me. They just name the square in it. Like E4 for the Pawn. I have no problem seeing P E2-E4. I've learned that the P isn't there for some reason, so I get to see E2-E4. In Dark Chess, it can sometimes be more important which square a piece moved from than where it moved to.
As much as I like the Descriptive Notation, Dark Chess is one version of Chess that I'll keep the long algebraic notation in use. I think Janus or Gothic Chess would be interesting to see the descriptive notation used in, but it's way passed its time. Judging from the people here that had never even heard of it, I doubt it'll be nothing but faded memories and something one comes across in old Chess books before much longer if not already.

Emne: Re: notation addition
Walter Montego: Correct about the drawback, e.g. N(B1)-N3. It's much easier to read though in my opinion. If I have to play it out on a board I'm very slow with the algebraic notation.

Nothingness: And I thought I was the only left that liked the Descriptive Notation! :)
At least there's a few options here for the algebraic and I can use the long form of it.
P E2-E4
Though I still like P-K4. The long algebraic notation is a good one to use for Dark Chess. It helps me visualize the board better than using all them shorthand methods. I'm not much of a fan of abbreviation as it is. The descriptive notation does have certain drawbacks, especially when two pieces of the same kind can move to the same square. Longhand algebraic is the least ambiguous of the four styles that I've seen. I've never seen the numeric one on any site, it'd work fine too.

I just noticed that when I hover my mouse over a flag, a popup hint tells the nation and how many registered players are from that nation. Is this new to Brainking or just new to me? Either way, its kinda cool.

from http://www.excaliburelectronics.com/history0799.html

"In the 1970's, The US Chess Federation began a campaign to convert the US to algebraic notation, which had by then become standard in nearly all countries. The arguments for the change were several: that US books would then enjoy a bigger international market; that algebraic was less ambiguous and therefore produced fewer irretrievable game scores; that algebraic took less space and more games could therefore fit into fewer pages."

Emne: Re:
Fencer: Oh, that's because you were born on the continent, in the 20th century. It's an old, archaic notation, with assymmetric notation for white and black moves. It's called descriptive notation, or English notation, as it remained popular in English speaking countries until 30, 40 years ago. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descriptive_chess_notation

17. mai 2005, 15:31:07

Everything is notated from the player's point of view;

So K1 is e1 for white and e8 for black. KB3 is King Bishop's third, or f3 for white and f6 for black.

P=Pawn, N=Knight etc (rest is obvious).
- = move
X = capture

example.
e4 e5
Nf3 Nc6
Bb5

would be
P-K4 P-K4
N-KB3 N-QB3
B-B5

note that it is NOT B-QB5, since B-KB5 is not possible therefore there is no ambiguity.

I think 0-0 and 0-0-0 is fine for castling, and + is fine for check.

Need any more?

Where can I find more info? I never heard of this notation.

i think that's much easier as well, though i rememeber all caps, so P-K4 and R-N3 etc. I remember the old Kt-B4 as well (lol), but I think N is better for a knight.

So I second the vote.

I'm not used to the newer style of notation for chess. Im from teh old school chess notation such as p-k4 kr-kb4 pxN etcc... this was the easiest form of notation, that there was and no one uses it anymore. is it possible to add this? Taht is one of the main reasons i havent played chess here. And b/c people use progrmas to help them play, but thats another story

Emne: More profile info
I know, I know... I was one of those that suggested profile infor should be split accross multiple pages. And I think it's better this way.
But I'd like to see on the main profile page some info about the players favourite games / games (s)he's best at. Something like "Top 5 most played" or "Top 5 BKR".

This way I would know in a snap which game to challenge them to.

Or, as an alternative, place the "Invite this player to a game of..." option in the "Finished Games" page of the profile
