 Chess variants (10x8)

Sam has closed his piano and gone to bed ... now we can talk about the real stuff of life ... love, liberty and games such as
Janus, Capablanca Random, Embassy Chess & the odd mention of other 10x8 variants is welcome too

For posting:
- invitations to games (you can also use the New Game menu or for particular games: Janus; Capablanca Random; or Embassy)
- information about upcoming tournaments
- disussion of games (please limit this to completed games or discussion on how a game has arrived at a certain position
... speculation on who has an advantage or the benefits of potential moves is not permitted while that particular game is in progress)
- links to interesting related sites (non-promotional)

Walter Montego: Looks like no decent square for the attacked Marshall, but what would you play on Nc5 attacking your Queen and making a bit of room for the black Q and K?

Beren the 32nd: Apologies, although it seems no-one has pointed out my mistake. I get those clever sisters confused sometimes. It is Susan's younger sister, Judit, who is the best female chess player ever. Susan is just as famous though.
So you don't have to be playing in super GM tournaments to quickly learn the rules of GC and then give Mr T a good beating. There's hope for us all.

tenuki: Thanks for the link. We cannot say too much about GC on this site can we? But your link led me to this link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_Chess, which although it is about GC, actually contains some great insights into the differences between 10x8 chess and standard chess. To top that, it also has an annotated game where the best female chess player ever demonstrates her enduring talents by trouncing Trice at his own invention!
Susan, please give up beginners chess and promote the adult version: 10x8 chess - thanks in advance.

SMIRF Engine: Thank you for this detailed news, and good luck with Octopus. I think quite a few people here will be interested if you give us an occasional update on how it is going. All the best!

Emne: news?
Does anyone know of any news in the world of 10x8 chess? How is SMIRF progressing, for example?

Emne: A recent Embassy Chess game
As this board has indeed been a bit dead I'll post a recent Embassy Chess game:
Embassy Chess (Walter Montego vs. Beren the 32nd)
My honourable opponent was playing better than me, probably even up to move 34, when I suddenly had a forced win despite having less material.
For someone new to 10x8 chess, the end of the game might be worth looking at. It's a good example of going in for the kill with all your pieces. Also note the 'pins' involved.

Emne: SMIRF progress
Reinhard,
Good to hear from you anyway. I see that SMIRF is still playing some games here. How long do you let SMIRF think about each move? Is it closer to a couple of minutes or a whole day? The choice would surely affect its playing strength.
Also, are you still working on improving its playing ability?

Emne: Re: RULE TO BE ADDED
SMIRF Engine: It is interesting that you say there is no advantage in this case. I will not look too closely at your analysis, as only one move of the game has been played so far, and (again!) I don't want to have an unfair advantage, this time by knowing about SMIRF's understanding of the position.
This still leaves the question about the rule. Can Fencer or anybody tell me if it will be implemented?

SMIRF Engine: I have been given a position with neighbouring Bishops as white in this game: http://brainking.com/en/ShowGame?g=1930943
Do we know if Fencer was planning to implement the new rule or not? I don't feel right about playing on with an unfair advantage, unless I'm allowed to count it as a slice of good luck. Other games on this site involve luck don't they? ;-)

Emne: Re: RULE TO BE ADDED
SMIRF Engine: An interesting conclusion. I would tend to agree, especially if the Bishops start out pointing at the opposing King.
This raises some questions though. How can you decide if the advantage is too great? Are we talking about a SMIRF position evaluation of more than 0.3 for example? What about other positions, like where the Cardinal is next to a Bishop?

Emne: Embassy chess castling
Does anyone have any thoughts about which is normally the best side to castle on in Embassy chess?
In standard chess, it is much easier to castle on the king-side, so queen-side castling is more unusual. However, in Embassy chess there are more pieces on the king-side instead, but does this make queen-side castling better to aim for? Maybe it is better not to castle at all!?

Thankyou both for answering. I found your other finished games quite interesting to play through.

Can anybody see why white would resign in this game:
