My grandfather, in the German imperial army, died somewhere on what was called the western front, winning a posthumous iron cross. I still have it. His daughter, my mother was later kicked out of the country as a non-member of the human race, luckily for her (and me), because a short time afterwards they had other ideas for disposing of our people. I have now been happily married for 28 years to a woman of the enemy country of that granddad. One of her grandparents survived Verdun, fighting on the other side. One day our children will carry passports marked simply "European". Good luck all.
