Assunto: Bathtub Hockey

I'm one who'd never fling my cats into water.  I haven't viewed the video, but what I've heard reminds me of one of my cats (Comet) from decades ago.  Her name came from her habit of ranging unseen in far corners of the apartment, then every so often racing past wherever I was, only to disappear once again.  She made me think of a comet's trajectory, and their occasional speeding passes near our Sun.

One of our play habits was sliding a plastic button around inside the bathtub, where it would follow nice curvilinear paths around the banked sides.  She enjoyed it so much that sometimes when she saw me headed that way she'd race to the bathroom and leap right in, anticipating another wonderful play session.  Once--only once--she leaped into the tub to find that I'd drawn a bath about 15 minutes earlier...

Rose: I heard a story on the radio this weekend about the Atlanta Humane Society having received a number of Micheal Vick football jerseys as donations--to be used as animal bedding, or possibly for cleanup.  A worker there mentioned one dog using a jersey as a pillow.

Jim Dandy: Since a recent merger/acquisition, the company I work for began offering pet insurance as a payroll deduction option.  At first, that sounded pretty cool!  But unfortunately, the participating vets were quite a bit farther away from home than my regular clinics.

My    just hate to travel in my , and aren't the least bit shy about letting me know it!

Jim Dandy: Pardon my cynicism here, but I think I live in a country where people can get as much "justice" as they can afford.  And unfortunately Mr. Vick can afford plenty of it.

I hope I'm wrong.

Assunto: HELLO AGAIN, SEAWOLF2!

HERE'S A STORY FROM THE L.A. TIMES ABOUT A DOG THAT COULD USE SOME TRAINING IN FINANCIAL MATTERS!

DEBBIE HULLEMAN'S DOG PEPPER HAS BEEN KNOWN TO GNAW ON LIPSTICK AND MUNCH ON SHAMPOO BOTTLES. BUT PEPPER GOT HULLEMAN INTO A REAL MESS AFTER GOBBLING NEARLY $750.

"THIS IS PROBABLY THE WORST," HULLEMAN SAID THURSDAY, RECALLING HOW SHE POKED THROUGH VOMIT AND DOG PILES IN THE YARD.

HULLEMAN HAD ASKED HER MOTHER IN OAKDALE, MINN., TO TAKE CARE OF PEPPER AND HER OTHER DOG LAST MONTH WHILE SHE AND HER HUSBAND WENT ON VACATION. PEPPER, AN 8-YEAR-OLD BLACK LABRADOR-GERMAN SHORTHAIR, GOT INTO A PURSE BELONGING TO HER MOTHER'S FRIEND AND CHEWED THE CASH FROM AN ENVELOPE.

HULLEMAN'S MOTHER RECOVERED SOME OF THE MONEY THAT PEPPER SPIT OUT. BUT WHEN HULLEMAN RETURNED AND WENT TO CLEAN UP HER DOGS' MESS OUTSIDE, SHE SAW A $50 BILL HANGING FROM ONE PILE.

THE CHORE OF SORTING THROUGH DOG FECES NETTED ABOUT $400, SAID HULLEMAN, 50. BETWEEN THAT AND OTHER BILLS THAT PEPPER HAD EITHER VOMITED OR SIMPLY CHEWED ON, THE FAMILY RECOVERED $647.

THEY SWAPPED THE SOILED MONEY FOR FRESH CURRENCY AT A BANK. "I SOAKED IT AND STRAINED IT AND RINSED IT," HULLEMAN SAID.

Rose: LOL...that reminds me of something an online chatting pal once typed about her feline: "My cat thinks you are a bug." (I had to think about that for a moment, before I understood.)

My youngest cat still loves the Dragon.  It's so funny to watch her tracking it as it glides across the screen.

I might have to disable it, though, before she lunges and shoves the display to the floor.

anastasia: As all my cats have all their claws, I never give them a chance to get at the screens. I'm sure the screens would no longer keep insects out, once my girls had their way!
Years ago, a friend had a cat that got through a screen window, taking a nighttime plunge from a 3rd floor. (She survived.)

Rose: I'm irate. Just heard an interview about melamine having been put in pet foods intentionally, to make them appear to contain more protein than they do. Here's the first link I could find that discussed this disturbing possibility:

BerniceC: I think I got lucky when I saved a kitten last summer. Munch was given Hill's Prescription Diet m/d a few weeks after getting back home from intensive care. Either those old batches were okay, or...maybe we'll just never know.

What's got me puzzled is the talk about bad wheat gluten in dog and cat foods. There are some vegetarians (check!) who eat wheat gluten in certain kinds of Chinese food (check! check!). I never managed to find out whether I should be concerned.

Assunto: Cat Product Review
Has anyone here had experience with "Quiet Moments" calming sprays made by NaturVet? I've been mediating a political/territorial cat dispute at home, ever since saving a kitten last summer. As one funny person put it, "I'm nearly at the end of my urine-soaked rope!" (At least) one of my girls pees on my bed every once in a while--at least I got her to stop urinating in my study. It's so aggravating, but I'd really hate to have to send her away from here...

If less drastic measures don't suffice, I may have to administer drugs: paroxetine for the intimidating girl, and/or buspirone for the one who's feeling threatened/cornered.

I'll try the "calming spray" this week. Wish me luck...

anastasia: At the end of July, a friend and I took in a calico that might barely have been 2 weeks old and had lost its mom. She was so weak and tiny--had difficulty breathing, ear mites, little appetite, etc. I think she weighed about 10 oz. She wasn't thriving here at home. After a couple of days in the animal hospital, she started getting better. We took care of her ear mites, and she started gaining a little more than an ounce per day, consistently. Some people made fun of us for all the time and money we spent, but I'm happy. She's about 4 pounds now, and going in for her last shot and to be spayed this Friday. A real cutie--some dark coloration around her eyes that make her look like a raccoon or a bandit! She has no fear of the pair of 7 year old cats already living here. There's still some hissing going on, and occasional "punches" thrown and races through the house at breakneck speed...but I think they'll all become friends before long.
