grenv: Picture this: someone picks you at random and starts sending you crazy messages. At the first one or two you even reply, but then the other one just get's crazier and crazier and you end up blocking him to avoid receiving such crazy messages. As long as that user keeps the first couple of replies you sent, (s)he'll be able to go around the blocade and keep sending you messages...
Try to ask someone to send your message to that user instead. And to ask why (s)he has you on their eneemy's list, while you're at it...
Someone sent me a rather long message with several questions, to which I spent time responding only to find that the user has me on their blocked user list. (why, I wonder?)
I request that any response to a message ignore the blocks.
Fencer: There was this suggestion by BBW to color it by default but let it be changed by those who don't want the coloring. There seem to be two types of players - those who "click through" and that relay on board colors and those that take some time and that recognize the "Extinction" next to the board. But however: I think everybody will get used to it after a short while. Of course some won't like it for the first days, because it means a change in their visual recognition of the board, but that will disappear after a short while - I guess... It simply adds a great amount of usability for the rest of us.
could we have a different board for extiontion chess then for regular chess? it's really dangerous if you use 'move and go to the next game' or something like that...
BIG BAD WOLF: Okay, okay!:) I guess my ratings suck enough that few would accuse me of cheating anyway! (I never mind losing, and I love to play... I have always been fair and I guess it is the fairness in me that wanted to address the potential in anyone to ever think that I would cheat...) Anyway, thank you for your responses everyone. I remain, forever indebted to and in favor of this site, managed by our most dedicated game lover, the irreproachable Filipencer...
emmett: I would not worry about having someone play from the same computer - as long as there is not something very obvious (like many many games in short time with 1 person resigning or purposely losing, etc...) - otherwise I don't think Fencer pays attention.
I know he keeps track of IP and such, but 2 players with same IP alone is not something that should cause you problems on this site (others game sites, possibly... but not here)
emmett: I agree with Grenv. I always have a game or two going against my son, who lives on the opposite side of the world, but every couple of years when we visit each other we just continue playing from our own accounts from the same computer. There's no way I'm going to throw away a game to him, or him to me, just to cheat the ratings!
It was sugested that there be status messages like on MSN. If you do implement this could you implement a way that the autoplayer could set our status to either not online or to some special status mode while it is playing?
emmett: I disagree, most of the time cheating is extremely obvious, and easily achieved without usinng the same IP. Preventing "law-abiding" players from doing this is about as useful as preventing me from boarding a plane without any liquids..
My girlfriend recently spent a month in Toronto and New York. We live on the West Coast, and when she left I got her to start a BK account so that we could play and chat while she was gone. (Her name on BK is ultramarine.) We made moves on a couple of games from across the country, but now that she is back I was concerned that we would both be playing from the same IP address and that one day someone at BK would think that both were the same person. After our current game of go 13X13 is finished, I decided that from now on we should only play unrated, uncounted games with each other online. I suggest that couples and families who play on BK from the same IP address somehow register as multi-party users and then BK admin could have something set up so that all multi-users from the same IP addresses default to unrated, uncounted games. Such a preventative measure would limit the chance of cheating on this site, and that is something that has been addressed before on brainrook.com as well as on these discussion boards.
why can we not start the next round of a tournament even though all relavant games are not over? if the players with most points have already clinched their spot. Then they should be able to start their next round instead of waiting for two slower players who will not have any bearing in the outcoming of the later rounds.
Harassed: Or it could just say watching x vs x game currently on the phone. That way you can be playing live game with someone but let people know it may take a little longer then normal to move.
MadMonkey: Good idea, and the flag should be automatically reset when one does some different action than 'browse main page' to prevent misusing of it as cloak mode.
Harassed: That would be a good idea, to know what was on his TODO list or things that have been requested and he is working on so they dont get request again. People seeing what he is working on (apart from his secret stuff lol) may even have ideas to help him.
Oh, how about a message we can put up when we are not at out computers like in Messenger. Like many people i leave my PC logged in from morning till night, but i am not always here. If we could put an Away, Doing Dinner, on the Phone etc...message up instead of Browsing main Page it may stop people sending messages asking you to move.
Could be some link to Fencer's TODO list, at least partial, here? I would like to remind about one useful suggestion regarding to team tournaments, which should be really easy to implement. In team vs team screen to mark unfinished games differently, f.e. in italics, so we can quickly look at unfinished games when we are interested.
The notifications about finished games, tournaments, etc. come in our inbox as well as the personal messages. They often say something that we already know and are not something that I want to keep, so that I am deleting those messages very regularly, in order to keep the view of the personal messages sent to me. This is a repetitive and boring task. Those notifications are useful, but it would be much better if they came in a separate, new mailbox, called something like "Notifications". Then either we could leave them pile in there, either have a "Purge" button emptying this mailbox, either they could be scheduled for deletion after they are more than one month old, for instance. In the latter case, we could still choose to keep any notification we want, by archiving it.
we really need it. sphere froglet is the only kind of froglet i play any more, so when i play anti-froglet it's positively confusing to not be able to hop past the edges of the board. messes up mah mind!
not that my mind isn't already messed up. but that just messes it up more!
Could the Big Bosses please get a message when a Team Fellowship match finishes(and starts) please, as well as the Captain, just so we can the rest of the Fellowship up to date & post results.
I LOVE Loop chess. So, when I went to the Tournaments page I did a search for tournaments with "Loop chess". Several tournaments have exceeded their timeline but the "Loop Chess" game type has already started. But since other game types have not started yet, the tournament is still listed.
When a search for "tournaments to sign up" is filtered by a game type, and that game type has already started (can't sign up), could the tournament NOT be listed?
Would it be possible to have different min ratings for each game of a tournament? For example, if you wanted to set up a gammon tournament for the best players, a good rating for many of the variants would be 1800 or 1900. However, this would include almost everyone for backgammon and hyper backgammon. You could set up different tournaments, but this would be harder for everyone to find.
MadMonkey: Wow, MadMonkey you rock! I don't even know what your message meant but it was a great read! (I was dancing around listening to Stereolab and looking at the island from my livingroom before I read it, and now I am inspired to get on my bike. I'll reread it again, but thank you kind monkey)
emmett: If you understand b, /b & Links etc.... you should understand this
(font color="0000ff" size="+5") Hello (/font)
Replace the ( ) with <> and you will get Hello
Between the 2 " signs is an RGB code you can look them up on the web made up of letters and numbers for every colour you can think of. Size is pretty obvious i think LOL
I didn't know where else to ask this question, but it does concern a feature. I already know the codes to render things in bold and in italics, and how to create links. But I have noticed some write in colored fonts. How can I introduce colors into my fonts?
imsoaddicted: I thought you used his Greasemonkey Script. Any game you want can be added as a Priority (or taken off), then when you opponent has moved it goes to the top of your next game to play list. I set all pawns to it, and any red dot games i am in.
imsoaddicted: I am sure if you have a word with hexkid he will add it to his Greasemonkey script. I only have 5 options in my drop box now, the ones i need and use. Oh, and the priority games one.
Fencer: I uninstalled all the versions of Firefox on my computer (there were three!) and reinstalled 2.0. I still have the problem that I don't see a box when I click on "reply" in rich text mode. When I switched to plain text, I got the box.
