ok, here's another good question for you experts.

Can a ham radio signal that is about 2 to 4 blocks away affect a home wireless network? I've noticed that ours will drop randomly several times a day.

in about 1 or 2 years i will buy a new pc again .. or maybe a laptop next to this one

i also have a pentium II 400 mhz with 128 mb sd ram in my network .. the one which i use to get on brainking when my gf uses the 1800+ one :)

BIG BAD WOLF: also building the gamelistst on the main page is done in stages .. as well as the fellowship list in the right column itself

its quite a nasty bug in firefox when you are reading some reviews and want to scroll down to the final page to read the summary ... reviews often have a lot of pictures .. which make the page skip all the time .. so you cant click on the 'go to next page' on the bottom .. its moved each time :) .. when i am on the (slow) internet at work i dont have the problem though as i can click the button before any pictures are loaded :)

Assunto: Re:
Eriisa: It is actually because Firefox is quicker to load pages then other browsers which sometimes mess up BrainKing a little.

Since Firefox will start showing a page before it is completely loaded, what it does first is show the left column, then it load the middle column (moving over the far left column), then it will load the right column (again, moving over the other 2 columns) - causing it to look like the screen is "jumping" around.

Only sites like BrainKing which use columns will you see this. Plus if you are on a fast enough connection, you rarely see it.

Thanks, I had wondered what caused it. Didn't think it was a BK bug but rather something in the browser. Its no biggie. I'd still prefer firefox even with it.

LOL. I only use IE now for eBay or if I need to download something.

Eriisa: I get it all the time. It has to do with the rendering and how BK pages are layed out (NOT a BK bug or problem). Hopefully, it is addressed soon, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Badinage: The cache copy doesn't mean it's been withdrawn from the site, I just downloaded it right now. The cache was provided as it is in HTML, so users who don't have PDF wouldn't have to bother getting it or go to another site to convert it.

Whatever security features exist, screen capture is always an option.

Another google turns up http://www.verypdf.com/pwdremover/ - but I've got no way to verify it's claims since I don't use Windows.

I couldn't find any information regarding the new PDF technologies, could you give a link to the changes?

Interestingly, a look at my PDF viewer's (xpdf) site on page http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/cracking.html suggests that a change of the code would allow for evasion of security.

Considering that the code is freely available, it would seem quite weak. But I could be interpreting it totally wrongly.

As you said, it'll keep 99% of people out of it.

bitwisexor: For starters the white paper you found (as a cache copy-meaning its been withdrawn from the site now!!) was based on Acrobat 5

The latest Version is now Version 7.0 Professional, and the technologies have moved on at serious pace since version 5.

Version 7 has features that would even keep the most professional (cracker) at bay for a while, but like I said THERE ARE ALWAYS SIDE STEPS to all security issues.

Version 7.0 Professional however will keep 99% of people from Editing, Selecting and even Printing your document if you so wish!!

Assunto: new cellphone
i am buying myself a new cellphone this saturday.

i havent paid attention to any new developments the last 2 years.

all i know is that i want :

  • bluetooth
  • small organizer (just being able to place some texts on certain dates is enough)
  • small size & weight
  • no parts which can break easily
  • triband (i want to use it everywhere (for the usa i need triband, do i need anything special for asia ?)
  • java applets (i want to upload my own applets)
  • nice sound, not 'perfect' but nice will be enough :)

it would be pre, but no problem if it doesnt have:

  • navigation system (internal or external gps receiver)
  • ability to run applications written in other languages than java (vb? ;))
  • nice preinstalled games :)
  • fm radio

i dont care much about (but i wouldnt mind either):

  • camera (i have a real one)
  • mp3 player (i have one)

i want to be with the new provider for 1 year .. but maybe i will go for 2 years (no longer :)) .. plus i dont want to pay hundreds of euros for the phone itself :)

i am a bit biased against nokia as the phone i have now crashes quite often .. the battery fails .. and it powers up again .. but i will have lost my connection and have to redo any actions i was doing at that time

does anyone have any suggestions ? ;)

(i will be checking out this site today)

Antje: I have not tried Netscape 8 yet - The features I really like on Netscape are also on Firefox also. I will probable try to load it - always nice to have multiply browsers to test things. (And I do not use RSS so that is not a problem for me). Plus Firefox will continue to be my main browser of choice

i like the new netscape, but i cant find the email icon? did they delete that? or am i blind? i read the FAQ's, and went through the help .. still didnt see it.. is it there?

thanks Badinage, i dont know anything about RSS, maybe i need to investigate? so far in using Netscape, i havent come up with any blank pages, and it loads quicker than IE, i just want to set up my mail acct, ive always used netscape for that.

Assunto: Re:
Badinage: "O
bviously there are ways around these security settings (as with anything thesedays) but genrally they are secure!! "

Generally they're secure? I don't see how. Could you explain?

My logic goes that it is impossible to prevent editing. If you can read something, then you can edit it. You can put whatever DRM technologies you like in it but if at any point it reaches output, it is compormised.

It's like trying to stop music from being copied. You can put it in a DRM format, but the moment it reaches speakers then those speakers could also be recording it. And once it has been recorded, you can have it in any file format you like - and so, easily editable. You don't even need to reverse engineer the format if it's secret.

Well, I suppose the point is like many DRM technologies, it stops users who don't have the knowledge - in this case, how to use google...

A quick google turns up ww.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Adobe/Gallery/PDFsecurity.pdf or in HTML http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:zTA8yxcJthYJ:www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Adobe/Gallery/PDFsecurity.pdf+PDF+security&hl=en

Don't rely on PDF or any format for stopping people editing. It's impossible! If you want to prevent people reading it, then encrypt it with some strongish encryption. (Recommendation would be PGP - although arguably the encryption of the data is done with IDEA cipher, IIRC.)

One notable exception to capturing and editing is a technology that I think (I could have imagined it, I can't remember it clearly) is distorting somehow (I said I couldn't remember it clearly) an image that a human would not notice (as the brain corrects it) but would make any recordings obfuscated. This, I would argue, is a failure in recording equipment and would still suffer the same problems if captured directly - i.e. not through a camera.

If you also use IE along with Netscape do note that the installation of Netscape kills the XML feed element of IE (RSS pages like the discusiion groups now have etc come up blank.) There is a work-around but it involves editing the registry.

My advice? Until Netscape fix that little issue, if you want to use both netscape and IE stay clear, if you just use NetScape its great :)

It depends on the security settings the creator of the PDF has set, they may allow you to edit or they may not?? That is one of the biggest selling factors for PDF

Look at a company that creates a full QMS (Quality Management System) with approx. 100 health and safety documents. They sell this service for thousands of pounds. In the past it was really easy (using find and replace) to alter the word documents for a different company and sell the documents onwards.....now using PDF and the security settings their intelectual property (if you like) remains theirs!! As you simply can not edit it.

Obviously there are ways around these security settings (as with anything thesedays) but genrally they are secure!!

As for the shrinking element. If you have a word document at 2mb the best you could hope to zip it is maybe to 1mb or 1.3mb but as PDF it more like 0.2mb - 0.5mb

Badinage: ah! i never used them for real :)

if someone sets a pdf so you cant select anything .. can you still edit it ?

if i send word documents i always zip them also reducing the size a lot .. never tried to zip a pdf though :)

i rarely use word documents either .. mostly plaintext :)

PS: Most BK pages are between 15-25k as far as I can tell :)

Plus you can set your internet browser to not donload fresh copies of each page everytime you open them, but on BK that may not work too well.

Jason: Jason im not sure where you are based but im sure the Vodafone 3G Network / dataCard would suit your needs.

They have several tarrifs, I personally manage around 60 accounts for my company and use two main tarrifs for the users.

1) Connect 200 (which gives 250mb of downloads)@ £35/per month additional MB priced at £1.13 per mb
2) Connect 1000 (1100mb of downloads) @ £88 per month (additional = 0.59pence per mb)

There are others though:

450mb @ 53.00 per month
75mb @ 23.00 per month

The beauty of the G3 network is if you are in a G3 eabled zone you get connection speeds of upto 370k as opposed to the standard 56k of normal GPRS coverage.

Assunto: Re:
Hrqls: All depends really there are reasons that people use PDF formats instead of the word, excel HTML etc etc

1) Security. You can set a document so it wont allow changes, additions or deletions (good for tenders and quotes etc)
2) Copyright: You can also set it so you cant select text, pictures etc and also choose whether the recipient can even print the document!!
3) Size: PDF can shrink word documents 20 fold, making for faster downloads etc

Rose: I was thinking that the PC's had this ability too with Adobe Distiller - which I thought use to be free. Was looking now, and it is only available with the full (paid) version of Adobe.

It works pretty cool - in a word (or whatever) file, go to print, print it to the adobe distiller, and it would save it as a PDF - so not really "edit" PDF's, but would let you create documents in other formats and save as a PDF.
