anybody know anything about transplanting bamboo from indoors to out? we have one of those pretty china pots from the grocery store with three stalks of bamboo in it and i've been thinking about putting them in the ground and letting them spread out (as i know bamboo does under the right conditions) and form a natural privacy thingy between our property and the neighbors'...but i don't know what kind of soil conditions or anything bamboo likes. i could just look online, i know, but i figured i'd start here in case anybody has any first-hand experience.

plaintiger: I think you first have to identify which type of bamboo you might. It's a grass so most soils will be ok. It can be very invasive. Though there are some that don't sucker.

I have so many plans for the yard now that I'm working at home.

I think I'm going out this weekend to cut back the roses etc etc. Do ya'll think I should do the coffee ground thing in Dallas (zone 8) or should the soil be ok? When I met Jim 2 years ago, they were blooming like crazy! But I didn't notice a lot last year.

I think I'm also going to take a small plot and plant some veggies. I'm just dying for some collard greens!

Eriisa: I know roses love to be pruned every spring.. did you try some Miracle grow to help them..

As far as acidic soils go.. can't you plant like Tomatoes next to the area you are wanting to grow the bamboo..?? I know that most gardeners rotate certain veggies due to balancing out the levels over the years..

Eriisa: Ahhhhh Roses now that depends where you live.My area we prune them in the fall.We haven't had good luck with them, alot of little green wormies.yukky......

My blueberry bush does well with the coffee ground method. We put used grounds around the bushes and water them. Our soil here is very clay like concrete. You could have your soil tested.

ScarletRose: Yes rotating the veggie plants we also do,never plant the same thing every year in the same spot. Now i'd love to have my Bamboo outside but like my banana tree it is indoors.Winters are too harsh here in CNY except this year its been very unusually warm.

I work for the Association for The Help of Retarded Children

The kids are my favorite cause
We grow crops for retail sales, year round and all our profits go back into the Association. We have 2 large greenhouses and some beautiful gardens on an old estate on Long Island. Plaintiger...since you are so close, you should stop by someday. Our annuals are the best you'll ever find and we don't charge tax, because we're a not-for-profit. We are planting up our impatiens, begonias, dahlias, nierembergia, geraniums, alyssum, coleus, lobelia, etc etc right now.

I am not a big fan of roses, Foxy, but I know a little about them (very little)
