Fencer I think its time that this fiasco be stopped, having people banned for cheating (AT CHECKERS) and then bringing them back to moderate the board for said game is disgusting.

Maybe speculation about other peoples user names would be best not done here?

Personally I don't see thew fun in cheating... I have never had a 2nd ID... I have never needed one as far as I am concerned..
You have a genuine reason for changing Brian1971.. and as you say, your other ID is a dead one anyway... but there are too many people on here with multi ID'S... I sure hope it stops too!

I also believe LJ is Qwerty as well. OF course Lj is not always LJ either. He keeps changing into something else. Now LJ is MapleLeaf GZ for those who did not know. At least with AD changing his name, you know it is AD because the AD is always in the name. AS far as me having a second ID, I do have one. I admit it. However I havent used in since November. It was my original ID but after the big crash last year and all those games were lost as a result, I created a new ID and quit using the old one. So if anyone wants to accuse me of multiple IDs and cheating as a revenge motive check it out. The old ID is BlazinBrian. You will notice it has been stagnet since November. I hope with BK2 we will be able to rid the multiple ID situation so people dont cheat.

Just 2 ID's?? I would specify the question to:

Is there a way to tell if someone is using mutiple ID's?

it is a great game but can often take a very very long time on a turn based site, especially when both opponents are too scared to use the cube.
It is really the only way to play BG OTB though

About doubling cube - I would probably implement it as another "variant" of backgammon.

Crissie, I honestly don't know! I've never played with a doubling cube, and I did ask once at the backgammon board, and got an answer I understood at the time... but that was a long while ago and I've forgotten now! I'm sure if you ask again at the backgammon discussion board, someone would be good enough to explain it again :o)

Doubling cube!!!!! Yeah! This would make Backgammon here MUCH more interesting.......
It seems not a big change but actually IT IS A HUGE CHANGE! Just my opinion.

Subjekt: Backgammon Rules
Here is a good site for rules

- - - - -

"A player must use both numbers of a roll if this is legally possible (or all four numbers of a double). When only one number can be played, the player must play that number. Or if either number can be played but not both, the player must play the larger one. When neither number can be used, the player loses his turn. In the case of doubles, when all four numbers cannot be played, the player must play as many numbers as he can."

Plus the site also talks about the doubling cube! <HINT HINT> :-)

Jason
what happens is that some people (maybe without even knowing) moves one of the pieces and then cant move another ,but if it was made to know that two moves are available (either via the swop...or moving a differnt piece first) .. what tends to happen sometimes is that some players will move only one piece so they dont leave any open , (which you can do ..wether it is right or wrong ) .if you roll a six and a two ,you have to use the highest dice possible .

16. mája 2004, 15:55:45
LongJohn
this situation will not apply to double though as the 2 numbers are both the same and therefore you just have to keep moving until you have no more moves available.
The bug has to do with a roll of different numbers where moving a particular pieve with one number stops the movement of the 2nd.

16. mája 2004, 14:37:08
Chessmaster1000
Subjekt: Tiny Correction....
Of course if you rolled a double:
You have to use the maximum number of your 4 EQUAL playable numbers.
And not different of course as i said before:)

16. mája 2004, 14:34:47
Chessmaster1000
The rules are simple.

If you rolled a double:
You have to use the maximum number of your 4 different individual numbers. (You had to use all 4 numbers if you can, if not you have to use 3, if not you have to use 2 etc.....)

If you didn't rolled a double:
You have to use both 2 numbers if you can.
If you can move one number but not the other, then move this.
And if you can use any of the 2 but not both of them, then you have to play the higher number.

Andersp
Doesnt matter to me if the rules are "real" or "homemade" as long as all players know how to use them. If only some players know how to "handle" this bug its unfair imo.

16. mája 2004, 09:19:26
coan.net
(I'm sure someone will find the exact rules, or I'll search for them tomorrow just to make sure)

But I think there is also a rule like this:

If only 1 move can be made, it has to be made with the higher of the 2 dice.

Again, I'll search tomorrow for the exact rules, I remember seeing them somewhere. (Or someone else can jump in if they know them!) :-)

16. mája 2004, 08:16:00
Fencer
Yes, I know about this bug. The problem is that when I added Backgammon to this site, I was not aware of this rule. And then I was short of time and had to solve more serious problems.
Please confirm if I understand the algorhithm correctly:
1) When dice are rolled, all possible moves with the first die must be checked if a valid second [and third and fourth in case of double] one can be done as well.
2) If no such move is found, dice are auto-swapped and the process repeats.
3) If still no valid move using both dice is found, player is allowed to use only one die as a legal move.
Did I miss something? I must be absolutely sure before implementing it.

LongJohn
Maybe Fencer can look at this when he is working on the autopass :)
Bottom line with this backgammon flaw is, although it is not the real rules of Backgammon, if Fencer has programmed it that way, it must be "his" rules.

16. mája 2004, 05:24:05
coan.net
Yea, in Backgammon, there are a couple of rules that are not programmed here correct. Fencer does now about the flaws, and like Kevin says, it is on the list of things to do - but unfornatly - not everything on the list can be #1. (And as a big Gammon players, I would also like the known problems fixed - but will have to wait until Fencer has more time.) :-)

Artful Dodger
That I agree with completely.

16. mája 2004, 05:04:31
Andersp
Well..if some people know how to use it and others not then they have an unfair advantage..cheating or not.

16. mája 2004, 05:03:01
Artful Dodger
Subjekt: We've had this discussion before and it's my position
that it's technically not cheating simply because someone could inadvertently make the moves according to the order of the dice and be puzzled that only one move could be made. But, if the order of the dice was reversed (switched) then bot numbers could be played. Since the system allows this, it can't be considered cheating. It's a flaw in the system. It also occurs a small percentage of the time. I think it will be fixed in BK 2.0. :)

16. mája 2004, 03:23:35
Andersp
If there is a way to "go around" the rules in backgammon i think everybody should be informed how to use that "cheat". Remember we are playing prize tournaments in backgammon.

16. mája 2004, 03:14:48
LongJohn
yes, an agreement would be good.
We could add that to the list directly under the one that states that using a program to win games is cheating.
Good suggestion CM1000

16. mája 2004, 00:09:38
Chessmaster1000
Well i used only one dice, while i could use both, to test if the system will accept it. And suprisingly it did! Sorry about that.

Anyway, as i'm very pedantic with game rules:
IT IS A BIG DEAL THIS BUG. In the game of Backgammon you have to use the maximum number of your rolled numbers to have a legal move. So this game here, cannot be called Backgammon. Of course with the agreement you said, that the players must play it, although they have the option to do the opposite, the game can be called Backgammon again. So all the players must know about it! Perhaps you should write it to the game rules of Backgammon. Sorry if i seem too pedantic but i always want to be 100% accurate.

15. mája 2004, 23:50:46
Kevin
Yes, that is true. It will not force you to use both dice if you can possibly. If you have any idea about programming, you will know it is not simply telling it "If both dice can be used, both have to be used!". While I admit it is very possible (and will eventually be done) it is not number one on the priority list, and certainly will not be done before BK 2.0 is released. Until then, it's not that big of a deal. If you can use both dice, use them even though it doesn't make you. If your opponent does not use both dice even though they could have, let Fencer know and he will undo the move and let your opponent know that (s)he should use both dice.

Subjekt: Serious bug in Backgammon AI ????
In this Backgammon game:
http://www.brainking.com/game/ShowGame?g=343515
at move 32 i had to play 64. As it is well-known the rules for Backgammon say that: IF IT IS POSSIBLE I HAD TO USE BOTH 2 (or 4 if i had a double) NUMBERS OF MY DICE TO PLAY A LEGAL MOVE.
Well i had played only the 4, while i could play the 6 also. And Brainking AI accepted this.
What is going on.......?
