xmas is soon: the problem is that when i updated it it still said that the antivirus protection was outdated and needed to be reconfigured. i might use MadMonkey's idea and uninstall it then reinstall it and if that doesn't work i will uninstall it and just go with another anti- virus software.
jessica: I used AVG until i rebuilt my system and had no problems either. Have you tried uninstalling it & reinstalling ? If not there are quite a few good ones about, try Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
Binabik: Have a look at Mozillazine Knowledge Base: Lost bookmarks , it may give you some help also on how to find them. According to this if it is caused by the installer not properly detecting all Firefox processes, they are not lost.
I don't know if your Firefox is automagically generating profiles for each new installation, and if it is I don't know why or how to stop it from doing that, sorry :( Anyway, I thought it wouldn't hurt to see there.
hexkid: Thanks Hexkid, I will check that - but how can I prevent this from happening? I did, fortunately, copy my bookmarks a couple of days ago so I didn't lose as much, but it's still annoying...
Binabik: Are you on Windows? If you open the folder C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_WINDOWS_NAME_HERE\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ (or some such) how many folders do you get? Should be 1! If there's more than 1 folder you may be able to fetch your bookmarks from a "old" folder to the most recent one.
Close Firefox before moving files within these folders.
Sigh, this is the 4th time I've lost my bookmarks - this has never happened to me with IE and it's not making me a fan of Firefox. Does anyone know what might be causing this?
does anyone know any good anti-virus technology to download. i have AVG right now and when i tried to update it it just wouldn't do it. I did everything correctly and it still says that the anti-virus protection is out of date. this is causing my computer to become really really slow.
Thank you BBW! Now, do I install the 2.0 version and it will automatically replace the older one? Or do I install the 2.0 and then delete the first one?
Binabik: You can export (save) your bookmarks in Firefox (and any browser)
I'm not sure exactly in the old version of firefox since I have 2.0 sitting here right now, but in 2.0, you go to Bookmarks, and choose orginize bookmarks - where then you can find a file, export to export your bookmarks. (Will export to a simple html file.) And then if you lose it again, you can import back in the bookmarks.
I've never lost my bookmarks - I just simple install the 2.0 version and it copied everything over to the new version.
I wish I had as much luck as you all seem to have had.... twice now I've lost my bookmarks - if I want to un-install this version and then load the 2.0, what will happen to my bookmarks then? Should I first save them somewhere? Sorry, I'm not a computer wiz.... :)
Rose: I know, i have had the same when i crashed. There are loads of Tab add-ons, double click to reload, all Tabs different colors, and the one i like is a permanent Tab add-on, which obviously does what it says, you can set as many Tabs as you like to be permanent. So i have 3 Brainking ones there all the time now. Another great one is a Searchbar Autosizer box for Google, its only about 1cm wide now and grows the more you type in there & shrinks the URL box at the same time lol, way cool
MadMonkey: The coolest new feature on firefox is when u accidentally crash or have to reboot and u go to open firefox it says do you want to restore all windows you had open? I had 5 windows open before i had to do an emerg reboot and it opened them all back up.. way kool! I love firefox!!
Who says i spend too much time here ? lol I just spent 4 hours going through and try alot of add-ons for Firefox, all 2,468 of them There are some really neat ones to add along with the one that Mr, Shumway gave us earlier for resizing these message area boxes.
Mr. Shumway: Well, I switched to 2.0 and now have my rich text editor back. So far 2.0 looks pretty much the same, smaller icons at the top. That's all I notice
Rose: The only issues in upgrading might be several extensions not compatible yet. But the widely used ones already run with 2.0 - all that I use do ;)
Anyone using Firefox 1.5 get a recent java upgrade that prevents the rich text editor here from working? Fencer suggested I upgrade to Firefox 2.0. Dont know much about it and compatibilities. Anyone has any insite?
MadMonkey: its been more noticeable in the last couple of weeks and if your trying to make fast moves plays havoc with your eyes and its the same on each of the 4 browsers i use
imsoaddicted: I asked hexkid about that. You mean when it loads a game page, it loads the left column, then the game board (which is active, so you can click on it) then loads the move list last, BUT when it does that it moves the game board to the left. Hence if you have already clicked on it, you make a different move. It is the most frustrating thing on Brainking, and is real bad when the site is busy. He suggested something in his 'user scripting' Fellowship, but cant think what it was now, go look lol
p.s. it does the same on every page if you notice, here its left column, then these message boards, last the right hand column which the compresses the whole page.
Baked Alaskan: Is that the "Walnut Theme"? From the Stephanie's comments in the User comments there, I believe version 1.7.0 does not exhibit that behaviour.
Maybe you should update it? Try Tools/Add-ons, select Themes and click "Find Updates"
Baked Alaskan: I believe it's because of the size of the icons on that "line". I can't reproduce it here (screenshot 1), but with a few tweaks to my userChrome.css file (screenshot 2, notice the path to the file) I got something similar (screenshot 3) :) ... maybe you can change your userChrome.css file to change the size to something you like.
hexkid: I believe you could always by default close a tab by middle clicking on the tab - I never done that, which is why it was a pain when that right X was missing to close a tab.
What I love about Firefox - like in your screenshot, you have a lot of "empty" space next to the "File-Edit-View-....Help" menu - I've moved the back,forward,reload,...Home buttons up to the left of the menu, then moved up the address bar to the right of "help" (removed the search since I just go to google if I need to search) - and now everything is in one line, leaving even more room for the web page to display. (My screenshot - http://coan.net/screen.gif )
BIG BAD WOLF: Thank you for fishing that tabMinWidth setting for me :)
With my setting (screenshot), I found out I can close tabs with a middle click on the tab (just like if it had the close button there too) -- I find myself closing tabs this way a lot of times!
Can change the width to fit more tabs in the tab strip before scrolling.
Setting of 50 is good (default 100) - instead of 12 tabs, I can fit 24 before scrolling - which occasionally when doing research, I can at times get up to that many tabs.
MadMonkey: Thanks - that helps. Now to search for how to increase the max number of tabs that show on a page before it starts to scroll.
This is why I like firefox - there are a few things I don't like about it, but I know there are ways to fix/change it. With IE, you will have to wait until the next version.
BIG BAD WOLF: I have been using Firefox 2.0 since the 24th when it was released. If you want to change the Tab closing back to how it was, have a look HERE, it tells you how to hexkid found it as he wanted to do the same, they may have the answer to your other question on more Tabs at the same Forum, or i guess you could post there and get an answer.
