TexasToest: A couple of hours south of Dalaas there's quite a few of us here as well. Nancy Griffith got her start here, lots of others... I just learned Norah Jones is an alumni of UNT, did you know that, Texas? Don Henley as well. Many great opera singers too.
<g>gogul</b> Texas girls love male guitarists! : )
I like the dixie chicks music.... I've always felt sorry for them. They (well the lead singer) said some anti-bush things - THINGS that are said many time now, but many people including people in our own government.... but because she said them before many others did, they seem to have paid the price.
BIG BAD WOLF: I think the biggest reason they got attacked so strongly was because they are country(bible belt) performers, the heart of Bush's and their support. If they were from the east it wouldn't have been nearly as big a story or issue.
Jim Dandy: actually, I caught them on a morning talk show today. I don't know if it was local or national. They seemed just fine, and said that it really wasn't a big deal to them. That it was a little thing. They are about to start on tour and seemed very happy and well : ) And yeah, I think alot of the hassles they got were because they were from Texas, not necessarily a Bible Belt thing, but a Texas thing. Bush was Governor here.
baddessi: I can understand how they would downplay the impact for public consumption,it's not a good career move to acknowledge a backlash making an imacpt, never let em see ya sweatI suppose I should have just stated that they pissed off alot of Republicans who also happen to be country music fans.Radio stations are getting death threats if they play the record.Their managment was wise to go in a pop direction with the look and sound of the new cd.
baddessi: I know, I know. I think I've been a fan of Nanci Griffith's since before you were born. And, yes, I knew about those two, and Stephen Fromholz, Michael Murphy, Mario Daboub (of The Nightcaps - wrote Wine, Wine, Wine), B.W. Stevenson, and on and on ad nausium. I knew them all (but not Henley or Jones - too young), we jammed every Sunday night at the Hob Nob in Denton.
TexasToest: sweet of you to say, but I'm prety sure I was born before Nancy. But I know when I was young, I watched her cut her teeth on that Red Brick Floor (Anderson's Fair??) downtown Houston. She had some good company as well. Lyle Lovett, who practically grew up in my back yard, tho he doesn't know me...Townes Van Sant(is that right?), Shake Russell..and let's not forget ZZ Top . not to mention Steven Stills, who I believe was from up your way as well, and my two favorite Texans of all time..Steve Miller and the one and only legendary Stevie Ray Vaughn Yeah, I guess Texas has made a pretty good contribution to music...oh yeah, Buddy Holly...shall I go on??? LOL
baddessi: No need, we know. It was Townes Van Zandt, and he was a really close friend of mine. His death took me down! Well, of course, Stevie Ray Vaughan is buried here. I think we've discussed having a ceremonial trip to his grave before. But, b'dessi, to do that, you have to come HERE!
TexasToest: thank you- I knew I didn't spell it right. Well, you know, I wanna come there, but kids, hubby and money aren't as eager as I am. You know, the Hard Rock Cafe downtown has a whole room (shrine) dedicated to Stevie. It's just off 45 on the way to Galveston (hint, hint)
