Properly done I don't know that it would mess up so much, thou I don't know antthing about the data base. Ha! look at the wasp nest I stirred up! ;)

14,000 ghost memebers don't make good active players, pandding for numbers on the list don't make a good game site for active players and...I wonder how many ghosts there are?

But there will be no more 20 thousand players on main page . And fencer like that number

I think Fencer should get help to do some of the things needed, purging the files like playBunny and Rose suggests would be one of them. I'd say all those 'players' not active since at least 2003 should be removed.

Rose: I would agree that it would be nice to some-how purge really old accounts, but I would rather Fencer spend time on new games then figure out a good system to purge names (while keeping stats and such.)

As a side note, I would almost bet if someone *REALLY* wanted a user name that had been used in the past (but not accessed in the past 1+ year), I'm almost certain Fencer could work something out for you personally to be able to change into that ID. Again, not sure - but if someone was in that situation, a quick message to Fencer would not hurt.

playBunny: Or Have the users names dissappear but their ID number still be intact so as playbunny said it could free up names new users may want. Lots of folks want their first names (like me) but they were taken 3 years ago by folks who never came back!

Eriisa: They could be made a seperate class of User. They wouldn't appear on any lists of live Users. On games that they've played their profile link (if they even have one) could refer either to a Deleted User page which covers them all or to an Archived User page which retains some or all of the original information.

So a "purge" of this sort needn't affect any ratings or histories or anything. I think it would be welcomed by many people. It might severely impact on Fencer's project time, though.

Doing this could also free up a lot of names that people might like to use.

Subject: Player list
I have found that at least half the player names on the 'player list' is out dated--no activity in the past year or year-and-a-half, and most of those are pawns. The list needs purging. And how about an alphabetical listing of of active players within the last 18 months? Team work, team work to improve Brainking. :) What is the best gaming site to play such games as BrainKing lists that is on the Internet?

wellywales: My experiences are that many people who log in only once a day and they just experience a temporary downtime which takes 30 seconds, they call it "a big problem". That's not a big issue. Moreover, our monitoring system logs all downtimes and we know exactly what the performance is. Of course, we cannot be responsible for network problems outside our scope.

I've seem that 'connection refused by brainking.com' too. I thought it could be from the number of players or something, so I gave it a couple of minutes, and it would be fine again.

... except when he had the site down, of course.
