whopper: OK,so in the final backet of a tourney the player rating portion of the SB is tossed out the window?

Jim Dandy: Not tossed out, everyone got the same SB. Each win gives the same amount of SB points (3 points) because everyone are equally "strong", according to number of wins.

Jim Dandy: Player rating (If you are talking about BKR) has nothing to do with figuring the SB.

It looks correct to me also.

Jim Dandy: Missed the "player rating portion" in your question, I thought asked if the SB was tossed out. Anyway, as rodnumbers says, player ratings are not a part of this.

Subject: Re: This has me a little confused as to how it ended a tie
Jim Dandy: The Sonneborn-Berger tiebreaker has nothing at all to do with ratings. It is calculated only from the results of the games played in this round of the tournament.

To compute your score in a tournament round, give yourself one point for each win, one half of a point for each draw, and zero points for each loss. In the present case, you played 6 games, winning 3 and losing 3, so your score is 1+1+1+0+0+0=3. The same is true for each of the other players.

To compute the S-B tiebreaker, multiply each other player's score by your score in games against that player, and add these up. In this case, each of the other players had a score of 3, and you won 1 game against each of them. Thus your S-B is (1*3)+(1*3)+(1*3)=9. The same is true for each of the other players.

Thus all players in this round finish with a score of 3 and an S-B of 9, and since no further tiebreakers are used, the result is a 4-way tie.

Tournament results are computed using only the results of games played in the tournament. No external factors (such as BKR) are considered. [The only exception to this in BrainKing's current tournament system is if a draw occurs in a single-elimination tournament, where, due to the structure of the tournament. it is necessary to have exactly one winner from each pair.]

Ok... I'm confused... I finished all my games for this tournament a long time ago... months... and don't have any chance of going any further. Yet, I can still not sign up for any other tournament until this one is over. People seem to be taking to long to finish their games... and meanwhile... I can't start anything new. Just a little frustrated.

azeria: Yup, that is one of the "downsides" in being a pawn.

Many times, as long as you are done with your games in a tournament (like you are), and you have no chance to move on to the next round, if you send a message to Fencer and ask if he can "release" you from the tournament so you can join another one, he will normally do that.

It really stinks that (I) Kiwiyeti is holding up this tournament:
All about Pente!
and (II) that Fencer won't change things so that tournaments advance once a round winner is determined, even if all games are not complete. Slow play is fine, meaninglessly holding up a tournament is not.

There are some tournaments I would like to join but I only know how to read english, I notice there are no americans signed up for these.
Is there a way I can tell if they don't want americans to join ?

Uninvited: I'd say you can either ask the person who created the tourney if they mind you joining, Or Join up and if they don't want you in they may remove you or send you anote. I've joined many tournies that I couldn't understand the tourney guidelines. I assumed if I wasn't wanted in I would be removed but that has never happened.</i>

it seems that knock out tournaments need all games to be finished before a next round starts ?

for example : this tournament

it would be nice if those fnished games of which the future is finished as well would start their next game

you can retire on a stairs though (even when you have some games going), you wont lose your position that way and the outcome of your ongoing games will still count (you will drop or raise acording to your win or loss, although you cant see it as you are not shown while being retired)
