Jim Dandy: The Sonneborn-Berger tiebreaker has nothing at all to do with ratings. It is calculated only from the results of the games played in this round of the tournament.

To compute your score in a tournament round, give yourself one point for each win, one half of a point for each draw, and zero points for each loss. In the present case, you played 6 games, winning 3 and losing 3, so your score is 1+1+1+0+0+0=3. The same is true for each of the other players.

To compute the S-B tiebreaker, multiply each other player's score by your score in games against that player, and add these up. In this case, each of the other players had a score of 3, and you won 1 game against each of them. Thus your S-B is (1*3)+(1*3)+(1*3)=9. The same is true for each of the other players.

Thus all players in this round finish with a score of 3 and an S-B of 9, and since no further tiebreakers are used, the result is a 4-way tie.

Tournament results are computed using only the results of games played in the tournament. No external factors (such as BKR) are considered. [The only exception to this in BrainKing's current tournament system is if a draw occurs in a single-elimination tournament, where, due to the structure of the tournament. it is necessary to have exactly one winner from each pair.]

Jim Dandy: Missed the "player rating portion" in your question, I thought asked if the SB was tossed out. Anyway, as rodnumbers says, player ratings are not a part of this.

Jim Dandy: Player rating (If you are talking about BKR) has nothing to do with figuring the SB.

It looks correct to me also.

Subject: Re: This has me a little confused as to how it ended a tie
Jim Dandy: Not tossed out, everyone got the same SB. Each win gives the same amount of SB points (3 points) because everyone are equally "strong", according to number of wins.

Jim Dandy:
What does "S-B" column at tournament tables mean?

S-B is an abbreviation for Sonneborn-Berger system. It is used to specify an order of players with the same number of points and is based on a theory that points earned with a stronger opponent are more valuable than with a weaker one. The S-B value is a total sum of points of opponents who lost the tournament game with the player and half points of opponents who drawn the tournament game with the player. Only if two or more players have the same number of "normal" and S-B points, they share the same final order.

All players got 3 points, and all players won once against each opponent. Seems correct to me.

coan.net
Subject: Re: This has me a little confused as to how it ended a tie
Jim Dandy: First you look at how many games each person won (Each player won 3 total games = so each have 3 points)

Then to get the S-B, you add the points of the opponent the you won against.

(So player 1 won 3 games, each person had 3 points - so 3+3+3=9, which is the S-B)
