Sujet: regarding tournaments
Would it be possible for an automated message to be sent out when a new tournament round starts, and also for our game page to show which round it is?
Also if a tournament starts off as a 1 game per player, not 2, that it has to stay that way for all rounds, until the final playoff? I just had a round 2 start which was 1 game per player in round 1, now we have to play 2 games per player, once a tournament is started, shouldn't the settings stay the same the whole way through?

Also, I like to play all games of the same type at once, in order to keep my brain from exploding. How about a "Move and go to next game of same type" button (maybe we could shorten the message but you get the idea).

Sujet: Re: skip option
this is a good opint. I too have a tendency to come to a game that I want to ignore for awhile because it is difficutl fo figure out my next move. But, that means I cannot use the "move and go to next game" function because it keeps going back to it. It might help if there were a way to demote the game to the bottom of the list, which is pretty much what scooter was suggesting. But, this should be low priority until the more important matters are taken care of.

Sujet: skip option
sometimes when i see a board and look at it i can't think of anything to do right awy and want to come back to it later... but want to be able to move onto the next game or some other game...

so how about a drop down menu offering to "skip and move to" option?? i don't know how hard this would be to implement, but all it would it take would be to add the exact same drop down meny that normally appears AFTER you make a move (for paying customers that is!)... and have it appear BEFORE you make your move.....

Not a floosie: Hi :-),only me lol, i put the same thing to Fencer a while ago and he responded as follows:

MadMonkey Drop down list 18. April 2003, 09:21:50

I had a thought when playing through some games (strange eh lol).
I often getting messages sent to me about all sorts of stuff, but have to go to main page then message box to get there.
I was going to ask Fencer if there is a chance at the end of the game we are in to add one more box to say Move and go to Message box :-) BUT....
then i thought it may be better to have them all in one drop box
i.e. have Move and go to next game as default then
some others incuded in a drop list, so we could make a move and basically go to most the important places we need to on the site :-)

Fencer Re: Drop down list 18. April 2003, 09:46:49
MadMonkey: That's really cool idea :-) Maybe I could reduce all buttons to just one associated with an action combo box.

Sujet: Re: Chess Variant Combinations
I understood you just fine, nothing went over my head.

Are you trying to say you were NOT speaking in opposition to the suggested combination chess variants? It certainly appeared that way.

As for your claims, I see nothing impractical or complicated about the combination variants, what exactly is the problem?

As for my reference to pente, I thought it was fitting since you so vehemently argued in favor of what I (and many others) consider to be an illegitimate variant and then you seemed opposed to apparently legitimate chess variants.

If you were NOT speaking in opposition to the idea of creating those chess variants, then I misunderstood you, but If that is the case it was because your statement was vague, not because anything went over my head.

Dmitri,

Apparently, the entire meaning of both the second and third paragraphs in my earlier message went right over your head!! I did not question the legitimacy of combining variants; I just state that they are usually not feasible in a practical sense. And your insidious reference to the pente discussions has nothing to do with the subject matter here.

Loop Chess is best implemented as a two v two game. Your partner plays the opposite color and you both play simultaneiously against the other pair. Any piece your partner captures can be put onto your board during your turn. How about this as a variant for team comps?

These seem like legitimate variants to me. WHat is wrong with combining two variants to make another variant? This is better than removing a crucial rule from a game and calling it a variant.

Sujet: Re: other games
There are hundreds of chess variants in the world, including many which are mundane (even frivilous) but also including some which are great game concepts!

However, the notion of 'combining' two separate concepts together (such as "dark janus chess") has as shown from time to time by enthusiasts not been quite as practical as the theories suggest.

Also, offerings and other things can quickly get complicated and the real meaning of basic ideas lost from a perpetual spiral of combinations.

I'm with you there, BBW! I'm awful at regular chess, so much so that on dark chess I do moves that good chess players wouldn't even THINK I would do! (most of these are done by mistake btw!) and that has given me an advantage before, because I'm not moving as an experienced player thinks I will!

A couple of other simple games vatiations that shouldn't be too hard to bring to this site - possible Dark Gothic Chess, Dark Janus Chess, Dark .... other Chess?

I like Dark Chess since I feel I have more of an advantage (since I stink at regular Chess), and to bring the Darkness to a couple of the other types of chess would be very interesting... plus I would not think too hard to program. :-)

Sujet: board games
Well I think if someone can come up with a good way to make a turn-based game out of cards, dice, or some other non-board game, I say go for it - make this site a little more different!

... but I don't really see how Pool would be very good at a turn-based site. As I see card games now, I don't see them being very good at a turn-based site either - but I would always be open to suggestions on how they could be! :-)

Sujet: Stick to board games
To all -

My suggestion is to refrain from making suggestions about card games and pool and other games that have nothing to do with board games. This is mostly a board-game site. Board games are great and IMO they should not be mixed with other types of games.

Obviously the choice to keep it that way is up to Fencer, but my feeling is that he will stick with his specialty and that is board games.

If we go that avenue, we could start asking for games like baseball, football, fantasy adventure games, etc. It's just inconsistent with the philosophy of a great board-game site like this.

I play 2-game matches all the time with the line games. You alternate the color you are for each game. The downfall is you do not play both games simultaneously and each game in the match is not calculated for rating, just the match result.

Sujet: Re: Arranging games
Interesting opinions. What I really had in mind was posting a pair of games to the waiting area (as opposed to two separate games with different colors, or a 2-game consecutively played match that only counts as one game point). However, it would also be handy to be able to challenge a specific user to a 2-game match, but as conditions are now, we cannot even do that!

A trivia board would be a cool addition. A board that I would like to see is a "problems" board where people can post when the have problems with games or other things.

I still have a problem with only this board that the (XX new) message does not show up with only this board.

I don't like to keep bringing up this problem I'm having, but it makes me have to check this board out over and over to see if their are any new post here.

(plus if it were to happen to one of the boards that I moderate, a lot of post might happen before I even go and look at the problem!) :-)

Dmitri: Yes, but the red number beside the "Message Box" Link informs you of any new messages, even while playing. But yes, both invites accepted or declined as one would be a good idea.

Sujet: Trivia board?
Fencer, is there any way you could add a Trivia board here? I'm feeling a bit guilty as the last 60 or so postings on the General Chat board have been in response to my quizzes. I would be happy to moderate any such board and to post up quizzes from time to time that people might like to take part in whilst waiting for their opponents to move.

Kevin, I don't think your solution addressed what I said-- if I am making my moves one after another, as I (and probably many others) do, a message in the inbox will not be veyr helpful.

I tihnk the easiest solution is the simplest one-- the games aresent as a pair, and they should be accepted or declined as a pair.

28. Avril 2003, 23:57:03
Kevin
This could be easily solved by having the server send a message letting you know if your opponent accepted or declined the invite. And if they just leave it, you will not get the message (or only get one message) and know that one was not accepted.

YEs, but there is a problem with this. HWen I am making my moves, I often use the "move and go to ____ game" function, such that I may start playing a game that was intended to be aprt of a pair without realizing it. Then by the time I realize the opponent has not started the other game, I have already moved twice and I cannot delete it.

If someone accepts one and not the other you could always abandon the game. It doesn't count to your ratings if you abandon in the first move or two.

I know what you are saying. You want it set up like on IYT with the 2 game match. However I play quite a bit of 2 game matches and I like it the way it is. However I can understand wanting each game to be taken into account seperately.

Sujet: Re: Arranging games
I agree with Pioneer54, somewhat. There is currently an option similar to what he is saying: You can invite someone to two games, then check the "alternate colors" box, and it will create two independant games that will each count individually and run concurrently.

The problem is, the opponent can accept one of the two and leave the other one, possibly to his advantage.

What I would like to see (and very possibly what Pioneer54 was alluding to) is the option to create a two game set of independent games that MUST be accepted as a pair or not at all. ALso, this would make the pending invites section of the main page less cluttered, because currently each pair I invite someone to takes up two klines on the page.

Why isn't there an option to set up a 2-game match (separately rated games each) against the same opponent with games to be played concurrently?

Eriisa, on Scrabble Bug to find a player go into 'start a new game', then its something like 'view profiles' or 'find player'. You can search for a player with a similar rating to you or by country. Theres quite a few on there!

It doesn't really have to do with how many players online...it is simply based on the number of requests. A request happens every time any user accesses a new page.

It's totally illegal to play scrabble online without permission. That doesn't mean it isn't done, but it would be a big risk for a reputable site to take, hence it is not on yahoo! or Microsoft zone.
Changing it enough to get around the copyright is possible but likely would be unsatisfactory for true Scrabble fans.
