BIG BAD WOLF: So my proposal (as well as by other people in here, I'm sure) is to keep that list with the items CURRENTLY being worked on, possibly marked differently, and any other items being put at the bottom, maybe with a smaller font or something - does that make sense?

Fencer: How I understand how Fencer works is he has a list of things that need to be done, 2 of which are listed above, but a lot of other smaller things. The "priority" of these items as I understand change all the time. He does not like to give a "time frame" on when things will be ready because if I remember correctly, the last time he did that and he ended up not having it ready "on time", it caused more problems with people asking "Hey, you said you would have this done."

A list is a good idea to keep on the top of this page so people know what is hopefully going to be here down the road, but can also bring on a lot of "Hey, that's been up there for awhile - when are you going to get it done" type of questions.

That's why I left all my other jobs because I am the worst type of an employee and now I do only what I want to do and the only person I really have to show a progress to is myself!

I'd like to see the possibiliby of training games. A training game would have the following properties:
- unrated and untimed
- can be played against oneself
- can be deleted
- can takeback moves
- can manipulate dice in backgammon
- dark games should still be dark, because the opponent can tell parts of the position if this is needed.

Sujet: Re: Checker variants
Another good idea that might be considered is CHESKERS, which is a checker variant that combines some elements of chess. Here is a brief description of the rules:

A standard checker set is used, and the rear row of men (on each side) is replaced by (from left to right, in each player's view) a chess Bishop, a checker King, a checker King, and a "Camel" (represented by a chess Knight) which moves three spaces horizontally or vertically, followed by one space at a right angle, for example from e1 to f4. Opposing Bishops are at corners of the board's longest diagonal.

Jumping is compulsory, as in checkers, but capturing (by displacement, as in chess) with the Bishop or Camel is optional. Given a choice of jumping or making a capture, one must by made. Men reaching the last rank can promote to King, Bishop, or Camel. The object of the game is to capture the opponent's Kings.

Sujet: Checker variants
Some time ago, "International Checkers" was listed here as an item being developed, but then it disappeared. It is a good game, a bit tedious in the opening, but then fascinating positions occur because of strategic subtleties, the forward and rearward jumping, and long range of the Kings. Is this idea still being considered as an addition?

I'd like to know when someone has updated their profile. Maybe Fencer could add a mark or icon to someone's handle when I haven't ever read their profile or when the person has updated it. One of my long time opponents changed his profile to reflect something that happened in his life, but I had no reason to re-read his profile. If I was aware of an update, I'd be more inclined to browse someone's proflie and stay current.

People told me bridge is an interesting game. The luck factor is not very high, a even when you have all the luck, you cannot beat a prof. But here in the Netherlands the game isn't allowed under the age of 50 ;)

AbigailII: About the possible delay in cube introduction, well, we're still waiting on Fencer's declaration of progress on the matter :) Until now, we know that it is "in development", but how far?... (I personally wouldn't be interested, as I hate the cube, but progress reports would interest a LOT of others)

Sujet: Mancala games.
Mancala games are a class of old and well-known games. Many variants are played in Asia and Africa. It might be interesting to see them on Brainking as well.

Advantages:

  • The rules are simple, not only does that mean it's easy for players to learn, it also means that it's relatively easily to program.
  • Unlike yet another chess variant (don't read this as a complaint against chess variants...), it adds a totally new game.
  • There are many variants, all with similar rules. So once a frame work for "sowing games" has been set up, the number of games available on Brainking can be increased quickly.
  • It may attract a new set of players (next to the chess, checkers, backgammon, pente, lines, and army types...)
  • The games have been played for a long time, and by many players, so they are probably quite enjoyable.

Disadvantages:

  • If Fencer starts implementing yet another game, it takes even more time before there's a doubling cube in backgammon. ;-)

Sujet: Re: Checkers
Fencer: I think you should HIGHLY consider a new checkers variant. It is played on a 7x7 board with 7 pieces on each side. 3 pieces would be played on the backrow and 4 pieces on the 2nd row of both sides. The rules are the same as American Checkers. This game is very difficult and more perfect moves are needed to win. It could be called Bajan Checkers :) I would love this game to be added here and I'm sure others would love it too.
