Do you miss something on BrainKing.com and would you like to see it here? Post your request into this board! If there is a more specific board for the request, (i.e. game rule changes etc) then it should be posted and discussed on that specific board.
That would work too BBW although it would require a bit more maintenance. My idea, which is similar to the one used on yahoo groups, would automatically fend off those like "slam" (and any others) that sought to disrupt a forum though undeserved "slams."
The only drawback is that the moderator would have to approve messages of posters until they are put on regular status. But, once approved, they would be free to post unrestricted. A powerful tool for the moderators and a way to keep the forums clean and foil attempts of some to disrupt.
If such a system would be easy for Fencer to setup, he could also use your idea as well so that several moderators share the work. I don't think the amount of posts needing approval would be a problem.
Argomento: Re: I've suggested an approbation time for new sign-ups weeks ago.
I suggested it (in the future, but traveled back in a time machine to suggest it again) a few months ago. My thanks to both you and ArtfulDodger for supporting my idea®™.
a great game, just a suggestion to throw around, is it possible when one has a win for the other to see where the boats were (since they could not be found ) lol thanks
Fencer: As mentioned by danoschek below about Crazy Screen Chess, in one of my Screen Chess games I'm trying to set up pieces, and once I place them, I can not remove them to place them elsewhere.
the editor-bug has only occured if I used 'back' of the browser
instead of clicking at the piece on the board to remove it,
as probably intended ... - then only clearing the board helped. ~*~
the clear-link is right below the save-option, you likely found it meanwhile. :)
and I tried to point at the detail, that for me it worked well so far, but
as soon as I once accidently clicked 'back' in the browser, the piece
which was placed before, seems to stick somehow, - unremovable ... ~*~
I kind of like it the way it is - it give you a little more strategy when placing your boats (possible next to each other) since the other person may not know which boat they sunk or not.
But if this is changed, hopefully it is just to "new" games and not to games already in progress.
This is also at IYT...
The version we are playing now is called Dark Battleboats, if we see which of the boats we sink it would be regular Battleboats...
Is there any chance of having a version of battleboats plus with five shots at once?
Originally, you could hit the "Back" button and place multiple pawns in the same column in screen chess, for example. I asked Fencer about it, and he fixed it.
About the back button not removing the piece...When you place a piece, it is stored in the server. Hitting the back button simply shows you an older version of the page (in cache memory) without that new piece. Then, when you click on a new square to add a new piece, that other piece is still on the server, so it displays it. Doesn't it remove it when you click on it?
Screen Chess: When I clicked on the piece, it did not remove it. (I ended up "clearing" the whole board and just starting over because I did not want that one piece there!)
Battleboats vs. Dark Battleboats: Dark Battleboats you do not know that you even sunk any ships. Battleboats - you know that you sunk a ship (you just don't know which one for sure).
Battleboats Plus - I believe this is in the works (hopefully soon). I'm guessing (just guessing) Fencer is making sure that Battleboats is working good before creating the newer versions.
It removed fine for me on screen chess - i place a piece, and removed it just fine. Maybe you could tell Fencer the situation in which the piece wouldn't remove and he could look into it.
I have just noticed that on some of my game boards, my opponent's current activity (such as viewing a particular game or browsing discussion boards) shows up under his name! This is a real nuisance that isn't needed! Whatever brought about this ANNOYING CHANGE, I hope it is PROMPTLY REMOVED!!!
If anyone wants to look at it, they can use the 'profile' option
I don't find it annoying, but I do find it a bit usless (and probable taking more from the server by showing it).
I would guess some people like to know what their on-line opponent is doing, but I believe it should be an option that can be turned off in the Setting. (Or better yet, by default have it off and have the option to turn it on.)
... but if we are still on a slower server which gets too busy at times, do we really need the server making an extra calculation/pull of information for each and every game board that is pulled up?
If Fencer can come on and tell me it takes no more out of the server, well no problem - but if it does take a little more out of the server, I at least think it should be an option that is turned off by default and users who want to have it to be able to turn it on.
I won't disagree with the default turned off, or at least option to turn it off. But I would say that the effect of this on the server would be so minimal that no one would notice the difference. (Although i'm not certain).
But for all we know, it could be a members only thing - no pawns have said they have it yet ;-)
I think it's useful to know that the opp is online as well. Also it should make no difference to the performance of the site. The real problem is the probably the number of concurrent requests rather than the number of fields being returned from the database.
Well I hope you are right that it does not take much out of the server - with 2 request for each game - some players playing 1,000+ moves a day (2,000 time it checks to see if user is on-line, and if so find out what user is doing & display what they are doing on the screen - just for 1 player!).
I know Fencer said it would take too much out of the server to be able to "move to next game according to time". I would think this would take more out of the server as this new "nosy opponent" option, but I'm sure it does take some. :-)
<and indeed it is useful to know whether an opponent is just playing
our board - it might lead me to stay a bit and wait what happens.
perhaps the option by default should be turned off in server rush hours
- but if the wish to get the information lets someone load his opponent's
profile additionally, the purpose, i.e. less data-traffic, is missed ...
actually I would like to have a switchable stealth-mode ... 0:)
e.g. if I am viewing Dmitri's keryo-games to shamelessly utilize
his ideas against Erika's basic formation, her chance to notice that
would be blocked by me temporarily ... >:D ... ~*~
Fencer, often in chess the sequence of the next moves is clearly evident.
My suggestion for this purpose is to implementate the possibility of a sequence of
eventual moves, that you can offer to your opponent.
This feature could shorten many games. At another server www.kingchess.de(german,only standard chess, brainking is better!)you can look for this feature.
I would think this would be in the same category as "Auto-Passing" for games where you have to pass.
Fencer is against Auto-Passing (Where the computer will auto-pass for you if all you can do is Pass your turn). So it sounds like a good idea, but I don't think you will see it here any time soon.
Or, it sounds like conditional moves, which i have read about a LONG time ago (ok, relatively...lol). Someone mentioned it shortly after i joined, and Fencer said it would be quite a bit of work and would greatly affect server performance ;-)
I dont think that would be a good idea anyway, I'm pretty bad at chess and my next moves may not be what would normally be 'obvious' moves. I like to make my own mistakes in chess, and if I am to win then I'd like it to be by myself, not because a computer has suggested moves for me!
I dont know if is it good idea see where the boats are after the battle . If it is going to be used . Editor game is for nothing if i played many games with some user. He should know the location of the ship
harley: The computer wouldn't suggest anything. It would allow you to say "If my opponent moves this pawn to here, I will move my knight to here." or something like that.
Ah, I see, Kev, thanks for explaining. Still seems like a lot of work, especially when I might set all that up, and my opponent wouldn't move there!!
I suppose for chess pro's it could be a bonus, but I doubt I'd use it!
Argomento: screen chess editor having a mind of its own
thanks Kevin but everything was according to the rules, the intended
position worked well when setting it up for our game, on top of that,
even of some my preset games wouldn't load properly against macoan.
they simply leave one piece outside and ... are sulky ... :O
I made it now to find two usable positions, fortunately
stored yet from playing around with the new feature lately ...
I tried to set up one for the waiting room to see what happens,
but before somebody accepts, the editor is not available .... ~*~
I just tried setting up a Crazy Screen Chess game (that happened to be against BIG BAD WOLF), and it wouldn't let me place anything - it wouldn't let me load my previous set-ups, and it wouldn't let me place any pieces!
[Crazy] Screen Chess - HA - The system knows it is pointless for you to even PLAY the game against me! Muhahahahahahaha <evil laugh>
A positive thing!: My problem with this discussion board, and possible a couple of others with the (X new) showing up seems to be fixed now! So hopefully what Fencer did to the discussion boards reset everything for me (and hopefully for the few others) and I won't see that problem anymore! :-)
Fencer: For the last 2 days now all my BKR rating have gone from my main page. When i look back in settings, it has set itself back to show none - any reason why lol :o)
fencer i dont know if its at all possible but is there a way that people with a powerfull connection and a good system could help boost the sites performance when the site is struggling at say peak times ,i dont know if this is even a possible thing just an idea im sure there would be people willing to help out if it was possible
I would love to see this game here. Is it possible to make a turn based version? It's basically turned based anyway. You could have either 4 or 5 pegs and 4 or 5 colors depending on how difficult you wanted to make the game. Anyone else think this would be a great game to have here?
Is there anywhere on the net to see some rules or something for the game. I think I might have played it before, but I just can't picture it right now.....
I've tried this a few times, and still can not get it to work.
For the option of Move and "go to the next game of this type", I mark the check-box to set this action as default - but it DOES NOT make that option default.
Hum... interesting. After writing that message a couple of hours ago, I gave up trying, and the default was stuck on my old "and go to next game". All of a suddent without me doing anything special, the default turned to the "go to the next game of this type"!
Maybe someone is in the background fixing this - if so, thanks!
Now my current default is "go to the next game of this type". Now I'm trying to change it back to "go to next game" (and clicking the box to make this the new default), and it just does not change the default.
So it seem's like the change just does not happen right away. I hope I explained it well enough. (I expect if I just wait awhile, it will probable change to the correct default after awhile - like it did before, but that does not really solve the problem) :-)
