Fencer: Never thought about the Cell Phone. I don't own one yet but that would be cool to be able to play on one with the lower bandwidth and screen size fiting beter then the web page would.
ColonelCrockett: I can't say for sure what fencer would be thinking but I am sure both options would be available. The website is good for when you are using diferent computers(the library or friends computer). Software more convenient for your own computer(especially when on wireless low bandwidth conection)
mctrivia: I wasn't disputing the advantages, just stating an obvious concern (for me personally). There are measures Fencer can use to increase the security of a Client Software Platform, I've just seen too many clients that aren't safe.
ColonelCrockett: Very true. Though this web site is unencrypted so there really is no privacy isues that I can see that a client based program would have asuming of course there are no back doors included and it is a strictly push pull data type program.
I don't get it, there is no information on the site to worry about, and as mctrivia correctly says, there is clearly no attempt to encrypt anything anyway. Haven't we had this discussion?
ColonelCrockett: Some do. And these kind of programs are very dangerous as hakers will usually find the back door and figure out how to exploit it. I recomend people check out hacking web sites. Good way to find out how secure your stuff really is. But a good programer that doesn't want to get suid will not include a back door but instead will have an automatic update script wich checks the web site for new updates and asks the user if they want to download them. This way can only be hacked by taking over the server. And the user still has the choice of wether or not to download it.
I know that game improvements take precedence over discussion improvements (whether it be pm, game discussion or discussion boards), but would it be possible to put a "preview" feature in conjunction with a spell check feature?
Why is it necessary for the system to send me a message telling me what I just did? I can understand getting a message when my opponent rejects a double, although I don't get any messages about other game events ("Your opponent rolled double threes!!" or "Your opponent left a blot on his 6 point!"). I suppose it's a vestigial reflex left in the system after the conversion to multi-game matches -- it was easier to leave it in than to program it out.
mctrivia:
re: yes I know. but 50% usually is enough to get the gist. Have so far only goten one message that the translater gave me no clue.

no offense but not true at all.I do work for amnesty international, communicate in several languages.
I have learned that there are many words, expressions, concepts that have no equivalent in english & vis versa.and languages that are non latin based are something else completely.
nobleheart: I don't have any hard numbers about translators. What I do know is the only really good translation software is an audio translation software being developed(i think by MIT). The free translators though on the market are beter then nothing. They definetly are not perfect and a human could do a much beter job. My point was that in my experience they usually work enough to let you have an idea of what they are trying to say. Not the exact words they used just an idea.

My point is that people often put up the cute offtopic sign () but nobleheart wouldn't be able to see that he would just see 109 with stars around it. So I think and should be seen by all. And by the way I am now back on topic

Eriisa: A backgammon match with the doubling cube is played to a certain number of points. This usually requires more than one game to be played. A game may be worth 1, 2, or 3 points, in each case multiplied by the current value of the doubling cube (which starts at 1). When a double offer is rejected, the person offering the double is awarded points (equal to the cube value before the double was offered) and the match continues with a new game.
alanback: well, I thought it ended that game and a new one in the match started, but I thought maybe I was wrong.
The one thing I've noticed is that in a match, when one game ends the new one starts, and the msg is what catches my eye to tell me the new one started up.
Eriisa: Oh, it does end a game -- as I said, a new game starts, but the match continues. I don't need to be told that a new game started, any more than I need to be told that my opponent moved -- I know that automatically when the game shows up in my list, and I knew it at the time I rejected a double (or resigned a game, as the case may be).

my post:
what about the idea of selecting your own background colour on brainking?
was a only a feature suggestion, are we taking a turn on brainking to lashing out immediately?I though we had evolved past that.
alanback: I agree, I hate getting all those messages in the middle of a match. It's ONE match. Send me a message at the end saying I won or lost and that's it.
Princess Alison: Depends on which verb you're trying to get the word from. If it's from the well-known "smile" then it's smileys. If it's from the newly-formed "smille" (etymological analyses welcome!) then... you get my drift :)
