Ebru: Hi Ebru, I would like to know how difficult it is to distinguish between the i, ı and y. Do native Turkish-speaking people make mistakes in this or is the usage of them quite clear? We have just i and y in Czech, being pronounced the same way, and you'd be surprised how often Czechs make mistakes in using them.

Pedro Martínez:As you know Patrik, we have 3 kinds of /s/ on Farsi. You may find it strange that many many people don't know when to use which. I was walking on the streets yesterday just browsing the windows and noticed this:
قیمت های استسنايی
While it should be:
قیمت های استثنايی
It is only a matter of education. People need to be taught these things.

King Reza: Yes, that's because both ﺲ and ﺙ are pronounced the same way. What I would like to know from Ebru is how clear the usage of those three letters is for the Turks, in other words if the pronunciation differs and how much. :)

Pedro Martínez: Hi Pedro,
The pronounciation of i and ı are not so much different, ı is pronounced from throat like some french words but i is from mouth. For example, the word "other" if I write it here as phonetic, it is read as "adır". And that is how ı is pronounced in Turkish also :-) example of i is like this; "ill" while saying the first letter, that is the same sound of i in Turkish. But the hardest part for language beginners is to learn where to use them. In the speech it does not matter, but when writing it matters.

Ebru: Thank you for the explanation, Ebru. How about the Y letter? I noticed it's almost always followed by a vowel. That suggests me it's probably pronounced as the Y in "yellow". Is that correct?
