grenv: Good idea, except that normally 1 plays 4, 2 plays 3.

It depends. In the US Chess Federation, out of a pool of 100, 1 would play 51, 2 would play 52, 3 would play 53.... and 50 would play 100.

The rational is that the relative "rating difference" among the participants would be more or less constant.
