When does the round the pond game start?
Also, did read the rules, mostly about scoring, but doesnt say anything about the actual game? What exactly is it?

Has it been suggested that auto vacation not be activated if a person is logged onto the site that day?

Yes, that's how it works.

(i.e. empty even if, at a time, containing words) it's irritating. ~*~

No days carry over.

On January 1st, you get a fresh 30 days.

So if you have about 10 vacation days left, you can take the rest of December off if you want! :-)

do we get 30 new vacation days every jan. 1st, and if you have days left over at the end of this month, do they carry over and then added to your 30 new days?

Thats right, you can still play on those days even if they are set as vacation days. But if you can't play, you won't time out :o)

Thank you harley. I just went there and was able to activate vacation days for next Tuesday and Wednesday. Ah, the joys of hearings.
As I've gleaned from the discussion about the use of vacation days, if I'm able to play those days, it'll be OK to do so. Sounds like a good way of doing of to me.

10. December 2004, 22:36:58
harley
Sorry, it says 'activate automatic vacation'. Under the calendar heading.

10. December 2004, 22:35:34

Its on your settings, Walter. A tick box that says 'enable auto vacation'

Where are they located? I might have need of such a feature the next time I travel. I timed out two games awhile back because Vasailia's library wasn't open on Friday and by the time I got to Bakersfield the games had timed out.

Subject: Vaction Time
Maybe, you should be prevented from playing on a vaction day. That way you can't be selective on what games to play. With a comming off vaction day that allows you to play that day but then you can't take vacation afterwords.

I personally don't care much about it, I rarely look at games where someone else it going to move. If they are slow, I rarely notice.

Now if we can just get an option to show the notes field ABOVE the game board, instead of way below the submit button - we would be in busness! :-)

:) i use notes for that .. but i have to admit its tough in espionage .. also because there is a small bug when you go back in the history .. but still this use of auto vacation could be what people call abuse as its lagging the game

Truthfully? Because they are Espionage games and I need to go thru and figure out what pieces my opponents have left and what have been captured. I wish there were a captured pieces section, but this is opening up another can of worms that probably belongs on Feature Requests or the Espionage board.

the question is why you are using vacation days to prevent those games to time out while you are playing other games .. why dont you play the most urgent ones first ?

Thad
Subject: Re:
Well, that would work, Fencer. ;-)

I still think accruing days would work well too. ;-)

What about the situation I'm in now? I am using vacation days to keep some games from timing out but I am playing others. Would I only get 5 days?

MASTERMIND, what is it you need to deal with me about?

10. December 2004, 12:42:12
Hrqls
*nod* true :)

right now i think the abusers are just using their left overs before the year ends .. what about limiting the number of auto vacation days to 5 per month as well ? that would make it a max of 2 times (i think)

10. December 2004, 12:37:56
Fencer
Hrlqs: He cannot do it more than 6 times, considering the max number of vacation days :-) And the perfect solution does not exist, of course. We are just trying to find the best approximation.

oops it took me too long to write that post ...

i started using notes as well after i made some plans crash .. it works (although sometimes i forget to read them ;))

10. December 2004, 12:36:45
Fencer
Thad: After 5 days of auto vacation are gone, there will be no more auto vacation until at least one "working day" is over.

10. December 2004, 12:36:05
Stevie
I would go for this compromise of limit to 5 days at a time :o)

10. December 2004, 12:35:38
Hrqls
ok

(although i dont see the problem of slowed down games for rooks, but thats probably because i can hardly fit my games in my spare time nowadays, this site is much too addicting :))

5 days should be enough ... i guess i do have to set some fixed vacation days then ... which i was hoping to be done automatically as well (yep i am lazy :))

(hmm could it be done so that only on (team) tournaments it is limited to 5 days ?)

what if someone uses 5 auto vacation days, then makes 1 move, and uses 5 auto vacation days again (plus of course the max of time per move)

Fencer, with 5 days max in a row, how would you stop someone from using 5 days, then 2 weekend days, then 5 more days, then another weekend, etc.?

10. December 2004, 12:34:47
Fencer
Thad: You can always use personal notes for each game to store your attack plans :-) That's what many players do.

10. December 2004, 12:32:05
Thad
Subject: Re:
Some are simply bothered by games that take 'too long'. I personally am bothered when the game moves so slowly that I can't recall what my plan of attack was when I made my last move, especially when the game is at a critical stage. I'm sure other rooks can add more reasons.

10. December 2004, 12:29:33
Fencer
Hrqls: What makes players bothered is probably the fact that such situations slow down the affected tournaments and team tournaments. But, as I already said, all possible negative effects should be eliminated by applying a restriction of using auto-vacation in max. 5 days in a row. I think it's a sufficient time to make an arrangement even if you are in a hospital. Just ask a friend or a relative to send me an e-mail with your situation.

10. December 2004, 12:25:27
Hrqls
thad : i am not saying rooks arent bothered by it, but i wonder why they are bothered.

like kevin said, as a rook you can always start new games and let those slackers go at their pace and ignore their abuse

10. December 2004, 12:11:03
harley
Mastermind, I'm not for or against auto vacation. Personally, it doesn't bother me when people abuse it. But I can see why it does bother other people, so I wouldn't be opposed to any changes. I'm firmly on the fence for this one! :o)

Auto-vacation abuse DOES bother many rooks. You keep saying that it doesn't. I don't want to repeat myself, so please scroll down a bit to my post about it earlier today.
